Why do Hard boiled eggs have to be stored in a container in the fridge?

I didn't use a container. Do I have to throw them away? They're stored on the fridge door side...

I've never stored them in a container (never heard you were meant to) and just shove them in the fridge once they've cooled down and they've always been fine and I certainly aren't dead yet.

Palavah · 16/07/2021 10:11

Are they still in their shells?

lubeybooby · 16/07/2021 10:12

boiling removes some of the protection so it's just recommended, or coat the shell in oil. Can't see any harm coming from not doing so but for added freshness

I think the advice is not to protect the eggs but because they make the rest of the fridge smell.

LFQuery · 16/07/2021 10:16

I would be putting them in a container purely to contain the smell.

The main thing is that uncooked eggs can be stored for several weeks and dont even need to be in the fridge, but once boiled they are only going to be safe to eat for a few days.
Many people peel the boiled eggs as soon as they are cooled which is probably why they need to be in a container to prevent them drying out, but if you leave them in the shell I'm sure it would prevent drying out for a day or two but as others said they would still have a bit of a pong to them.

Eggs are pourus and will absorb the smell of other foods. Apparently if you put truffles in the box with them you can make truffled eggs.

faithfulbird20 · 16/07/2021 10:54

Yes they're still in the shell. Ohh I'll put them in a container next time. Thank you. How long are they safe to eat for? 5 days?

I always thought that if you don't peel them then you get a dark circle around the yolks, so peel and store in water in a sealed container.
I have absolutely no idea if that is true or not however!!

Stickytreacle · 18/07/2021 17:13

The dark circle is if they are kept warm after boiling, putting them in cold water straight away after cooking stops it.

Notavegan · 18/07/2021 17:14

I only do if they are peeled
