I've just got an electric waffle iron from Tchibo - it's gorgeous and makes little heart shaped waffles. We had some for tea tonight and they were lovely but sort of soft pancake type rather than crunchy waffle type things. Does anyone have a good recipe that has been tested in an electric waffle machine? Thanks.

The best way to make them crunchy that I could think of is to oil the iron before adding the batter, and cooking for just a little longer. Hope this works.
Also try adding a can of pumpkin puree and 1tsp of mixed spice to your batter for a seasonal scrummy waffle!

Hi,
I make heart shape waffles all the time, but I dont know the recipe, I mean I just add ingredients on instinct.

Basically

Medium sized bowl
half fill with flour
3 eggs
50 gram (ish) melted butter
milk till you get the consistency you want
couple tablespoons sour cream (full fat) for a really luxurious waffle

For topping
any jam you want
butter
sour cream with jam
butter & sugar

I am from Norway heart shaped waffle is our "national dish". You can make them as rustic or as elaborate as you want.

Smear iron with butter between each waffle.

When they are "cooked" lay them out on a - gosh I dont have vocabulary. you need to "air" them. SO they should be placed out on something that lets air in from both sides, a chequered string something. Even if they are crispy when they are just out of the iron they will soften. And then you pile them high after they have been "aired" a little. Does it make sense?

Thanks snowball - that's the recipe I used tonight! always go on instinct. I think they do need to be aired on a rack, I got the gril pan out but it had bits of dried bacon all over it which was a bit grim! Do you ever do savoury waffles? I was thinking maybe some parmesan added to the batter?

I dont ever do savoury waffles. (I do savoury pancakes though, same batter as the waffles, minus sugar, sourcream and butter) and just do savoury fillings.

The heartshaped waffles are not really "meant" to be crunchy like belgian waffles, I imagine you need more sugar and oil for that!

I hope you enjoyed them!

thank you for the suggestions - I've been googling and you can make a waffle batter with yeast as the rising agent. I'm going to have fun trying out all of these recipes!

The yeast one must be quite savoury though?

Sometimes I use self raising flower. SOmetimes I add vanilla sugar to the batter.

If for dessert they are lovely with fresh rasberries and a dollop of ice cream. You either fold the whole 5-heart waffle in half with filling in the middle, or each individua heart is folded with filling inside. Whipped cream is a good dessert alternative to icecream or sourcream.

You can also try adding oats to the batter for a wholemeal waffle.

I suppose you get some sweet bread recipes with yeast in them but yes, agree it could be quite savoury. I have to say they do look beautiful and I'm looking forward to showing off to all my friends.

Yes, sweetbread, with currants and those red and green things you find in stollen. But my mum uses yeast in every bread she makes, and had an interesting time making bread on bicarbonate of soda and baking powder at some point!

My grandmother used to make waffles with yeast and I loved them. They wern't savoury waffles but then again, we Germans do many different cakes with yeast which would be considered "bread" here.

I have a fab waffle recipe with hazelnuts if your interested, Jenkeywoo. It's rather high in fat overall but soooo nice.
