Making veg and split pea soup as perthis recipe.

Someone didn't tell me the split peas need to be soaked overnight

Buggerations - I've been on a soup making mission all this week having never made my own soup before, it was going brilliantly til the stupid flippin split peas

I have all the veg (plus some onion and garlic) sweating in the pan.

If I just go ahead and make it sans peas will it make a half decent veg soup?

Tricky little fellas, pulses.

Sounds like it would make a lovely soup. You could try adding barley or summat if you want more substance (you don't have to soak barley, I don't think).

ByTheSea · 23/11/2007 19:15

It will be okay. What I would do is search the cupboards to add some tinned beans if you have any (cannelini or something like that -- not baked beans), and maybe a tin of chopped tomatoes or any other veg you might have in (e.g., courgettes, green beans) and some thyme or herbs de provence. and then at the end, put in some pasta shapes. It won't be split pea, but it'll be a yummy soup.

I don't soak split peas overnight - I just boil the bejeesus out of them for about half an hour and then let them sit in the hot water until I want to use them. Sample a couple before you put them in the soup to make sure they are soft

JeremyVile · 23/11/2007 19:17

I hate barley - slimey feckers. I do love lentils in soup but tbh - I'm all lentilly-souped out!

Does this mean my veg and split pea soup would be crappy without the split peas?

x-post!

Oh ooh this is interesting re boiling the bejeesus out of them.... I wont die, will I?

I don't think it would be crappy, just a bit boring and I would jazz it up a bit with whatever I have in. That said, if bluestocking has made it without soaking the peas before and you have the time, go for it.

policywonk · 23/11/2007 20:08

I have a nice yellow split-pea dahl recipe if you fancy that Jezza.

CloudAtlas · 23/11/2007 20:11

what bluestocking said, will be fine, delia doesn;t soak overnight either so must be ok

JeremyVile · 23/11/2007 20:17

Ok - I got scared by the warning on the pack, it said if I didn't soak the peas over night my leg would drop off so I am just going for a veg soup...with extra seasoning.
(course, if I'd known Delia doesn't soak either.....)

Thanks ladies.

PW - that would be fantastic my lovely - I love dahl but have never attempted it myself.

some sorts of pulses (eg channa dahl) really do need some soaking and precooking if you don't want to cause hurricane force winds. I rather suspect split peas might be repetitious too.

If you have red lentils put in some of those - they don't take long and really are not so different from a very small split pea.

EmsMum · 23/11/2007 20:32

sorry, missed you being lentilled out. But heed my warning on local climate change!

JeremyVile · 23/11/2007 20:33

Eugh...I just tried it and it's sweet, really properly sugary tasting

I'ts truly awful...anyone know how I can counteract it? Or have I just wasted 2 hours and 2k of lovely veg.....?

OP posts:
policywonk · 23/11/2007 20:33

Wise words, EmsMum

policywonk · 23/11/2007 20:33

Sugary?

Did you put sugar in it, my dear?

JeremyVile · 23/11/2007 20:35

Emsmum - yes, I think that may be what the packet was warning about - and my leg would have been blown off rather than fallen off.

JeremyVile · 23/11/2007 20:36

No Policywonk. I. Did. Not.

I dont actually know what has happened... it's all root veg, which I suppose is sweet....I suppose......

OP posts:
policywonk · 23/11/2007 20:40

LOL at leg being blown off.

OK yes I see about root veg.

Hmm. If I were you I would...

Look! Out the window! Did you see that??

EmsMum · 23/11/2007 20:48

Bacon. Thats what it needs. veg and pea or lentil soup (even if you never get to put the pulses in) always needs bacon. Smoky bacon. Works well with a bit of sweetness.

JeremyVile · 23/11/2007 20:56

Oh, Emsmum thank you. Will try that.

PW (thoroughly disappointed in you btw) - Get back here and give me that dahl recipe

Have you thought about adding some bacon?

OK:
MOONG DAL (makes enough for about 4 but you can freeze it)

200g yellow moong dal, or yellow split peas if you prefer it thicker
2 large tomatoes, chopped
2 green chillies, chopped
2.5-cm-square piece of ginger, chopped
3 plump garlic cloves, chopped
quarter teaspoon turmeric powder
1 tablespoon coriander leaves, chopped
8 curry leaves
1 tablespoon butter or oil
salt

Wash the dal well and soak for 15 minutes.

Bring 5 cups of water to the boil in a cooking pot. Add the dal, plus the tomatoes, chillies, giner, two-thirds of the garlic and the turmeric powder. Return to the boil, then add salt to taste. Cook for 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and whisk gently with an egg beater until the grains are completely mashed [I used a liquidiser!] Add the coriander and the curry leaves, and cook for five minutes.

Heat the butter or oil in a ladle, add the remaining garlic and fry until golden. Pour into the dal, which is now ready to serve. The consistency should be like a creamy soup [but I prefer it thicker than this. My sister-in-law also advises adding burnt onion at the end]

Hey, look at that, it says to only soak it for 15 minutes. That would explain the mighty trumpery that ensues.

I don't blend it - I like the split peas whole. Or you could blend half and leave the other half intact.

JeremyVile · 24/11/2007 17:40

Cheers PW - will make that some point next week.

Emsmum - I decided against the bacon, it is so sweet tasting that I dont think anthing could have saved it and I'd have ended up chucking decent bacon in the bin along with my rancid soup.

Onwards and upwards, I soaked the split peas and am making pea and potato soup.

Fingers crossed
