Christmas Pudding. Anyone care to join me this Stir Up sunday?

This sunday (Nov 25th) is Stir Up Sunday, the last sunday before Advent, and the traditional day of the year to make your pudding.

All the members of the family should stir the mix (for luck) and make a wish.

If you are going to do it, don't forget to start soaking your fruit tomorrow.

The needle of home baking self satisfaction (and smuggery) hits the red zone when you serve 'made by your own fair hand' pud on Christmas Day.

They're so blimmin' easy to make yet oh so impressive!

Katisha · 23/11/2007 16:14

Oh yes, I'll be with you.

My mother makes me and my siblings a pudding each Christmas, tis a family tradition and I'll take ds over to her house for the big stir.

My brother and his family are in England and my two sisters live too far afield to do their stir, but I'll be making wishes on their behalf.

Slubberdegullion · 23/11/2007 17:51

Do you get a warm tingly moment when you, as a family, all stir the mix? I do. I am easily pleased and tingled aren't I?

Are you going to tell us how to make it Slubber? I haven't a clue, but I might go and dust down a recipe book.

Can we have shiny sixpences and things too?

Slubberdegullion · 23/11/2007 17:59

There are some recipes on the BBC link 110x. I am trying to find the Good Housekeeping recipe I use on their website. Dear God is is a clunky old beast over there, with ads for constipation relief popping up all over the place.

Bear with me. It's a really nice one.

Slubberdegullion · 23/11/2007 17:59

Oh sorry, have made you even more times 100x. apologies.

No, no I am liking the inflation.

I'm going to look in Delia, but will wait for your GH one too.

Slubberdegullion · 23/11/2007 18:11

Bloody Hell. There are women over there discussing how fabluous last years Christmas Pud recipe is/was...and no links to it.

Best I could do is this years one here. Individual ones. Look very sweet but probably a faff. Difficult to set fire to them all too.

Delia I'm sure will have a monumantally splendiferous one.

I can type out the GH one long hand if you would like.

ahundredtimes · 23/11/2007 18:13

Oh god no, please don't. Your wrist will be too tired to stir on Sunday.

Delia has. I am writing a list now. I think it'll be nice.

Slubberdegullion · 23/11/2007 18:17

I bet Delias Christmas pud is her zenith. I can imagine a scene no more pleasing than Delia with her family gathered aound her, wholesomely stirring their mix on sunday.

Vaugn Williams is playing in the background.

There is a cat asleep on a chair.

I'm not a chef Slubber, I am a cook.

OK. I'm all signed up now. Me and Delia are raring to go.

loucee · 23/11/2007 18:22

Oh thanks for reminding me. I really want to make my Christmas Pudding this year.

Was going to use Nigel Slater's recipe that has treacle in it but actually it might just be too heavy. So I'll check out Delia's website.

I've never made one before though - I'll need to go and buy a basin to cook it in, can anyone explain how you tie the muslin etc or don't you bother?

Slubberdegullion · 23/11/2007 18:22

Good wishes and seasonal encouragements upon you and your pudding.

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 23/11/2007 18:27

loucee, I do mine in a basin with greaseproof paper over the top. Mind you I nearly gave myself a stroke last year trying to tie the whole thing up with string. I may have negated the lovely Christmassy vibes by shouting "you f*ing b**ch" at it after 20 mins of unsuccessful string tying.

oh yes - thank you - will make a trip to supermarket and have a boozy sunday of cooking and virtusnessess.

100x fancy seeing you here (am stalking you really - WTF is going down 10/10?)

ahundredtimes · 23/11/2007 20:17

lol. There was a disagreement over disagreements Bee.

I have Taken Umbridge. [nose in air]

I am making a christmas pudding with Delia instead. There will be swearing with the muslin in the bath apparantly, or so Slubber promises, which I am very much looking forward to.

ahundredtimes · 23/11/2007 20:20

No, I have sent Umbridge back and have taken Umbrage instead.

ahundredtimes · 23/11/2007 20:27

Sorry for hijack Slubber.

Right. Puddings.

Slubberdegullion · 23/11/2007 20:52

Pre naked romping Tudors bump.

oooh a fracas on the vegetable thread....being discussed on the pudding thread. mn is a convoluted world of intrigue and cooking tips.

yomellamoHelly · 23/11/2007 21:03

Fantastic! I almost forgot about doing it.
Mind you almost wrecked last years pud by letting it boil dry on Christmas day causing be a post-birth (ds2 born a week earlier) hormonal life'll-never-be-the-same-again-and-I-can't-even-cope-with-this-simple-task -gah moment! Will try harder this year.

Slubberdegullion · 23/11/2007 22:16

post Tudors (sadly not even a heaving bosom this week) bump.

yomella, true story. My dearly departed grandmother (who always had staff) attempted a Christmas Pud on her own one year (thinking she could do without the staff, the fool). Unfortunatley the hyphen between the 2 and the 4 was missing on the hand written instructions so grandmother set up a round the clock rota for topping up of the water for the steaming pud over a 24hour period.

Of course it tasted like utter dried out shite when it eventually came to be served.

I think she got the staff back in the following year.

loucee · 23/11/2007 22:41

yomellamoHelly - that'll probably be me this year, I'm due exactly 1 wk before!
