Wanted: recipe for really dense choc cake with thick butter icing

At the community centre last week I had a really gorgeous chocolate cake. It was really dense, not light and airy IYKWIM. It was like a cake that had had one of the usual ingredients replaced. I only say that coz someone I know made a similar cake and it didn't have something in it, but I can't remember what it was. It was something like no butter or something.

Ok, I'm not making much sense here. Does anyone have a recipe for a love dense chocolate cake with thick butter icing? I've got people coming over for dinner tonight and want to make it.

in my mind there's one where you replace the butter with pureed dates or prunes something...

Chocolate oil cake!

9 oz self raising flour plus 2tsps baking powder
6oz caster sugar (I use golden unrefined)
3 oz muscavado/dark brown soft sugar
3 oz cocoa powder
8 oz veg oil
8-10 oz soya milk or equivalent
3tsp egg replacer starch such as ener-g or orgran or equivalent

Mix dry ingredients, then pour in all the wet ingerdients and stir till well mixed.

Pour in to two nonstick sandwich tins, preferably lined and bake for 25 minutes at gas 4 or till a scewer comes out quite clean.

It is practically essential that you leave this for about 2 day at least before eating after you ice it as it gets much moister and denser from the oil. Perfect before a party as you can get on with other things!

Ice with:

Melt a good knob or marg in a saucepan with some soymilk/orange juice/water
Add icing powder and cocoa powder in batches, seived in, and stir really well after each addition over a very low heat. Keep going till you have the consistency you want and its smooth and shiny. It will set up once off the heat so work quickly when you're icing the cake. If it sets in the pan just put back on the heat and stir, maybe adding a tbs or water.

Nah - the only diff really is that it is dry and so you may need a tiny bit of extra liquid. It is a blend of different stratches to create the same binding and leavening effect of eggs in baking. There are no silly questions here!

Yeh use whatever milk you want. Like I said, the recipe I give is the way I do it but the original was a non-vegan recipe it was just unusual due to the oil as the fat! Enjoy x
