can i make bread using

self-raising flour. it's the only flour i've got in the cupboard

not normal bread, no.
you need strong flour which has enough gluten in it to [knowledge of science breaks down] do the gluteny things gluten does.
But you could probably make something vaguely bread-like, sort of soda bread or something?

hm, im using half wholemeal half white. maybe there'll be enough gluten in the wholemeal half to make up for it

It will just be a bit scone-like in texture, i think.

I think it will be ok as there is some gluten in it. You will need to knead the hell out of it to stretch the gluten.
Or as K says just make soda bread.

ive just emptied the flour in to a jar and burnt the packet in the fire so i don't know! think it was proper bread flour
