Hello, any recommendations for a wonderful authentic Italian cookbook?

Gino’s Italian Escape (we also have his Healthy Italian for Less book which is great)

myrtleWilson · 17/06/2021 09:06

Claudia Roden Food of Italy - divided up by regions
Anna del Conte
Rachel Roddy - she moved to Italy and her cooking is mix of her heritage and that of her new home - particularly Sicily and Rome

The Antonio Carluccio ones are good, southern Italian feast is my favourite.
Diane Seed 100 pasta recipes is fabulous, not fancy, not full of glorious photography, just absolutely authentic.
If you want authentic avoid Jamie and Nigella.
Rick Stein isn't bad.

doadeer · 17/06/2021 11:37

Oh I want them all!

Having been to Jamie's Italian I can safely say I would be avoiding that option 🤣

I like the Antonio Carluccio & Gennaro Contaldo books. Also anything by Giorgio Locatelli especially his books featuring Sicily.
Elizabeth David is an old favourite too.

Marcella Hazan.

Mominatrix · 17/06/2021 21:29

Second Marcella Hazan

rottengreentomatoes · 17/06/2021 21:31

Second Claudia Roden. Also love Angela Hartnett.

TheSandgroper · 17/06/2021 23:45

Marcella and Elizabeth. Darina Allen’s Simply Delicious in France and Italy for simplicity.

The Silver Spoon!
It's the definitive.

Couple get it as a wedding present in Italy

Came to say this.

Thank you!
I've ordered the silver spoon but I'll look at the others when I'm finished that one.

I just can't get enough of Italian flavours and I can do some basics but I'd like to get better and expand my repertoire :)

They really really don't. That's what the American Amazon blurb says but nobody would dream of doing such a thing. In the 1950s mothers used to give it to their daughters so their husbands would be happy (so much wrong with that, let's not even go there) but these days it's not really talked about that much. I wish! We have a wedding on Sunday, three of us, nephew, = £250 per guest ballpark figure. If only a cookbook was an acceptable gift! OP- it's the Italian version of say, Mrs. Beeton back in the day, or Delia's Complete Cookery Course. It definitely contains everything you'll ever need! If I remember correctly, it now sells more copies outside of Italy in its English version.
SiobhanSharpe · 18/06/2021 08:19

Marcella Hazan's recipes really work.
Then there is also Nigellissima - Nigella's book focussing on Italian recipes.
She lived and studied in Italy for a while when she was younger.

AnnaMagnani · 18/06/2021 08:28

Claudia Roden, so happy to see the love for this book.

Then you can start your obsessive collection of Claudia Roden books and get her Spain book, Arabesque, Jewish Food,... no-one does a cookery book like her.

Geamhradh · 18/06/2021 08:30

Love Claudia Roden!

Gastropod · 18/06/2021 09:37

Anything by Anna del Conte. The best Italian recipes I've come across. I have the Silver Spoon too, it's good classic Italian but Anna del Conte writes beautifully, with lots of useful commentary and tips as well.

mathanxiety · 19/06/2021 23:43

Lidia Bastianich is an authentic Italian restaurateur in the US who has had several TV series there.

Her books are fab.

Shamelessly place marking this - love Italian food!

NaughtyPrudence · 26/06/2021 08:25

For Roman and Sicilian Rachel Roddy www.theguardian.com/food/series/a-kitchen-in-rome

For Northern Italian
Classic Food of Northern Italy Anna Del Conte

I live in Italy and can vouch for both, they don't adapt recipes to make them more British like Jamie O does.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 26/06/2021 13:47

Another vote for Claudia Roden
This Italian book is one of my favourite cookbooks. Along with her Spanish one.

TillyTottenham · 28/06/2021 14:14

I highly recommend Julia Della Croce's books. My mother was Italian FWIW!

Xiaoxiong · 28/06/2021 14:19

I use the Marcella Hazan books all the time. Worth it just for the chicken with two lemons recipe!! But so many wonderful recipes that are firm family favourites, super short and simple ingredient lists without all the cheffy fiddly bits.

Anna del Conte has the best apple & olive oil cake - it gets significantly better over the week so it's the perfect cut-and-come-again cake.
