Chicken breast - dated 11th... shall I cook it?

It went straight into the fridge and has been at the back since I bought it last Wednesday.

I’ve had a sniff and it doesn’t smell and looks ok, isn’t green or slimy.

What are the chances I’ll poison anyone if I roast them today?

2 days past its sell by date? No, I wouldn’t - but I am very strict with chicken having had a really bad dose of food poisoning from it a long time ago 🤮

Eminybob · 13/06/2021 17:23

I would. And regularly do. And I’m still alive Grin

toffeebutterpopcorn · 13/06/2021 17:23

Bugger! How annoying is that?

It’s not for me - it’s for DS (16 and built like an ox).

Nope, I wouldn’t with chicken.

MyHusbandTheIdiot · 13/06/2021 17:26

Yes, I would, as long as I checked it thoroughly before serving that it was 100% well cooked the whole way through.

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 13/06/2021 17:27

It will be fine!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/06/2021 17:28

We had bacon rolls with bacon dated 28 May yesterday and we're all still here. Sniff it, then touch it. If it smells or feels sticky don't risk it

toffeebutterpopcorn · 13/06/2021 17:30

My sister laughed and asked which year. She sees use by dates as a challenge...

Not with chicken, I wouldn’t no.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 13/06/2021 17:32

Looks like egg curry tonight then!

FlowerArranger · 13/06/2021 17:36

It'll be fine!

bunnybutts · 13/06/2021 17:37

I would as long as it smelled ok.

LycraCladLucy · 13/06/2021 17:37

I wouldn’t for a DC, even a 16 year old, as I like know they’re eating fresh food. For DH or myself I probably would.

BoilingRage · 13/06/2021 17:41

I try not to keep meat in the fridge too long in hot weather as it’s being opened all the time and warm air goes in. Our fridge is boiling hot at the back because it’s having to work so hard. Generally freeze meat if I’m not going to use it that day or the next so definitely wouldn’t use it, even for DH, if it’s been in there for 5 days and is two days out of date.

FlurryMuff · 13/06/2021 17:44

Never

TheWeeDonkey · 13/06/2021 17:48

Normally for chicken I go by what it smells like, I've had chicken in date go off and chicken a day over taste fine.

Georgyporky · 13/06/2021 17:54

How did earlier generations manage without instructions?

Just sniff it - you'll be able to tell instantly.

StiggyZardust · 13/06/2021 18:29

I would if it smells ok. I unwrapped a chicken today dated 11th (forgot it was there), it smelt vile - straight in the bin!
