Themed week ideas please

I'm devolving the cooking and meal planning into a family affair, and as a phasing-in of new responsibilities we've done few weeks of Hello Fresh to get teens and DH into the swing of it. Now we're moving on to the next stage: themed weeks where each person picks their own recipe.
We've had an Italian week and a veggie week so far and it has been really great!
Please can I have suggestions for themes with enough obvious dishes that I won't need to help them choose? Thanks in advance.

Can free week, nothing out of a tin

Alfresco/BBQ week (while it's hot!)

Family recipes only week

FizzyPink · 08/06/2021 22:42

We did one where everyone picked a flag out of a bag and had to make a meal from that country which was quite fun.

We’ve also done Chinese, Mexican, Indian, Jamaican, Danish and Japanese themed nights during lockdown

CatNamedEaster · 08/06/2021 22:47

We do a similar thing once a week, it's been great for getting us to try new things and we have a committed carnivore, an almost vegan and food allergies to cater for!
Greek night was good: lamb and veggie kebabs, vegetable fritters, tzatziki, pittas, split pea dip, salads, olives. Lots to choose from and pretty easy and healthy.

These are great, Thanks.
I think I'll put all the ideas on a hat and then we can take it in turns to pick one out.
Please do keep them coming!

While we've been unable to travel over lockdown, whenever we were due to have been somewhere (between the 4 of us, including school trips and childfree trips, we missed quite a lot...), I did a few themed meals for the places we should have been, which was quite fun (not as fun as being there though!).

These included Spanish (a few times), Italian, American, and Greek. Wasn't sure about Croatian! Also tackled a few things we'd only ever had out (usually US) - so ridiculous cinnamon rolls which were crazy delicious, deep fried buttermilk chicken burgers and prawns. Things I wouldn't normally attempt.

Polish week, probably best during winter.

Persian
Moroccan
Irish

Around Britain eg Lancashire hotpot, Welsh dishes, Yorkshire pudding.

At one time, I bought a beautiful dinner service with a pink and green decoration, and for a while I served pink & green meals on it, chilled pea soup, salmon & asparagus, raspberry fool etc. But that might be a step too far for you!

ODFOx · 09/06/2021 11:09

These are all great Thanks!

The china idea sounds like a really fun way to tie a theme together but (almost) all my china is white: Milk, potatoes, the bottom of leeks, rice. That's all I've got!

Meals made from ingredients all beginning with the same letter.
Meals made with 5 ingredients or fewer.
One pot / pan meals on the hob only.
Meals made in the oven only
Meals eaten cold

Greek meals week
Irish meals week
Welsh meals week
Scottish meals week

Don't forget puddings and cakes!

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 09/06/2021 23:12

Oh we did similar in lockdown and loved it.

Youngest dd chose Japanese
So we did sushi, ramen, katsu. Can't remember what we did for dessert.
Eldest chose American
Spicy shrimp, massive cheeseburgers with all the trimmings and snicker doodle cookies.
I chose Greek. Stuffed vine leaves, kleftico, homemade pitta and fruit I associate with Greece.
DH chose Italian and I cannot remember for the life of me what we had other than bruschetta.

Going to do it again soon.

Oh and we did cocktail week too.
Mocktails for the DC and a weak pina colada for the eldest (16)

ODFOx · 11/06/2021 12:45

Thank you all for your help with this.
DC have chosen Mexican for next week and then 'eat your greens' for the week after where each main dish has to have green veg as a major component/in the name.

I'm particularly looking forward to Mexican week as next Sunday we'll have margaritas! Thanks to the op who suggested adding cocktails 😄.

Could pick a certain veg/fruit etc as the theme. E.g cauliflower week. Curry, cauliflower macaroni cheese, roasted cauliflower steaks, broccoli and cauli cheese, cauliflower rice.
Or aubergine- ratatouille, mousaka, roasted aubergine, etc
Also Japanese week, tex mex, cheese? fruit and savoury week? (Gammon with pineapple, salad with strawberry's and Balsamic, kebabs with chicken, peppers & pineapple, Hawaiian pizza, pork with apple, watermelon and feta salad

FeedingFrenzy5 · 16/06/2021 14:30

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 18/06/2021 14:54

Food from whichever countries are playing each other in the Euros on a particular day?

ODFOx · 22/07/2021 14:47

Brought back the thread to go OMG? How are Greek people not enormous?
We're in Greek week and in spite of the heat I don't think I've ever eaten so much. Everything is so delicious and moreish and yet because of the herbs and lemon nothing seems too heavy.

The experiment overall is going well but costing more than I usually spend on food, though I think that is a consequence of following recipes all the time rather than using up things as I go though the week: it'll we a while before the whole family can do that.
