We need more Veggie Meal ideas.

We're not veggie but do try to eat vegetarian at least once a week.

We are struggling a bit though to find meals that we all enjoy.

Plus one of us had an allergy to Cow's Milk so cheese is out.

So far we've got a curry and some fajitas. Tried satay veg noodles this week but the youngest is fussy and they weren't a hit.

Has anyone got any ideas on what we can try?

Use cheese made from sheep or goat milk?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/06/2021 19:28

Veggie spag bol - I use the sachets of Merchant Gourmet Spanish lentils as the 'mince'.

Chilli with Quorn mince

Lots of varieties of curry - Indian (so many of these), Thai, Chinese style

Risotto

What sort of things do the dc usually like?

Goat's cheese so hopefully OK.

Depends what sort of flavours they like - are they adventurous?

I’ve just cooked kimchi and leek fried rice with a crispy fried egg for our dinner. Quick and delicious but only if you like strong flavours.

Quorn chicken pieces are really like chicken. Good in a risotto.

Quorn isn’t great for children as it’s really low in iron. Soya-based substitutes are far more nutritious.

Use cheese made from sheep or goat milk

It's really not advised to give anyone with CMPA goat's or sheep's milk, but thanks fir the suggestion.

If you give us more info about what the kids like, we might be able to give you more ideas.

Vegetarian chilli, serve with salsa, guacamole and those who can eat dairy can add cheese/sour cream as desired. This www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/burnt-aubergine-veggie-chilli is always recommended here and for good reason. Can also use leftovers to top baked potatoes.
Pasta with roast veg in a tomato/olive oil/vegan pesto sauce.
Shakshuka with crusty bread. Add chickpeas if you want to make it more filling.
Extra veggie fried rice
Falafel, hummus & salad wraps.

I imagine given you eat meat you won’t be too anxious to try fake meat as you’d definitely tell the difference with most of it but some of the traditionally meat producing companies have recently been doing great veggie sausages, far better than the quorn/LMcC offerings. It turns out it’s all in seasoning mix… So maybe worth a try for a veggie sausage tray bake/toad-in-the-hole etc?

OP, as a pp has days, without knowing more about your family’s food preferences, it’s hard to recommend specific dishes.

As you need to avoid cheese, I would visit the BBC Good Food website and filter to vegan recipes.

We used to do a veggie curry and veggie lasagne as standard (we've slipped a bit more into eating more meat of late). Veggie burgers are a good option - I like Jamie Oliver's Bhaji burgers (contain paneer but I think this could be easily substituted for tofu) or there are lots of decent fake meat type burgers out there. Plenty of pasta dishes are naturally meat-free as well so you don't feel like you're missing out.

Dhal

Caponata

Dosas with potato curry filling

Stir fry and noodles

Crispy tofu with sweet chilli sauce

What style of food do you like?
I have fads. I'm currently on Vegan Eastern European. I have not long finished my Iranian vegetarian phase.
Let me know what you like and I'll flick through some of my favourite recipes if I have any in the style you like.
