hi there - my ds has been unwell for weeks now with a cough/cold/ virus type illness. He has got over the worst, and has been checked by the doctor on a regular basis. However, he still is hardly eating anything - a few mouth fulls at each meal time and some days literally nothing. He has lost weight and is low energy. Now when he does eat he quite frequently vomits it up. The doctor has told me not to worry as long as he is drinking fluids it is fine for children not to eat. Any experience of this...I feel very worried

My 2.5 yo went through a couple of phases of not eating when he was little(er) and the doctor always said it doesn't matter if they don't eat. He still doesn't eat alot of food all the time, but is healthy.

If he still has a cold babies tend to (sorry this is a little disgusting) swallow the snot which sits heavily in the tummy and makes them feel full, hence the being sick when they eat.

If he is well again and not got a runny nose I would be inclined to try reintroducing solid food again, as when first starting them. Small amounts of gentle foods. Maybe even babyrice.

But in my experience it will get better again.
Hope he gets well soon

thanks for that - i just tried to give him some mash potato with butternut squash. We were doing really well - then he threw it all up. He has now gone to sleep. I feel worried but I guess I'll just have to sit this out.

Am going through the same thing with 8.5mo DS who is recovering from ear infection followed by bronchiolitis, has eaten hardly anything for two weeks. The hospital told us as long as he is drinking milk it's fine, but to keep an eye out for signs of dehydration (no wet nappies, sunken fontanelles).

I am offering a bit of easy food at each mealtime and not worrying if he takes none, and having tissues handy for the frequent mucusy voms.
