We are all ill, ill, ill - snotty, coughing and thoroughly bad tempered! Want to make something nice to eat with my son as he can't go to pre-school, and is driving me up the wall.

Any ideas for cakes or treats that can be made for and with v young children. My recipe books are all very grown up and healthy veggie cook books - I need something less 'wholesome' right now

Don't tell the food police[plead]!

Oh it has to be Marsladys Lemon Drizzle.

I could sit and eat a full one and think I'd done nothing wrong

MerryAnnSinglemas · 16/11/2007 10:06

you could make brownies or shortbread or ginger biscuits

MerryAnnSinglemas · 16/11/2007 10:07

sorry, that;s not helpful, just suggesting stuff - am meant to be working so can't stop to look up recipes ! hope you feel better soon

How about a nice easy all in one Victoria sponge? Saint Delia shows you how. DS could do some sifting and stirring, and maybe spread the jam in the middle?

Feel better!

They all sound lovely ladies I will get ds to help choose - he wants icing and chocolate - so maybe a sponge with lots of icing - hmmmm

I would offer you all some but we will be coughing over it all the way through - bleurgh -

Thank you for sympathy - not got much from dh as he was too busy obsessing over getting My Bloody Valentine tickets!! Still we got them.

Is Marslady's recipie still on here? IF it is could I have the link? I have heard so much about it I salivate at the thought

bigmouthstrikesagain · 16/11/2007 12:02

I want to cry - the cake is crap and flat and my chocolate melting attempts went horribly wrong[sob]

I am just going to have to bundle us all up and walk to the shops and buy a cake!!!

I am a good cook - this is so depressing...

Why don't you do something easy like dip fruit in melted chocolate (banana, apple etc) or freshly made popcorn which is a real comfort food in our house.

OldenGoldie · 16/11/2007 12:05

Oh no! What is it about bad days that they just keep getting at you!

Hope the shop cake lifts your spirits a bit - maybe the walk will help a bit!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 16/11/2007 12:09

my dd is too young for popcorn (19m) and the choclate went really weird and sort of dry and crumbly (very diff to desc as it has never happened before)

Anyway my faith in my abilities are shaken I think a walk is a good idea too - just have to get everyone dressed now - I think a cup of tea first!

Did you maybe get a splash of water or other liquid in the chocolate? If so, then it sounds like the chocolate has "seized" and it's happened to everyone at some point. You can rescue it (so that it's ok for dipping) by stirring in about 1tbs veg oil for every ounce/30g of chocolate used.

  • rice krispy treat with marshamallow
  • special K treat with chocolate
  • playdough is also great fun to cook. magic mmoment when it actually turns into dough. And you can mix favorite colors.
slim22 · 19/11/2007 06:20

cookies cut with favorite playdough cutters and sprinkled with cinamon sugar.

Now if you really don't mind crap additives etc........., go to sainsburys and look for thomas the engine/dora/bob the builder etc.... ready mixes for cupcakes.
Follow instructions. dead easy. Loaded with sugar.
make sure it's not raining that day so you can sweat it out in the park before bedtime!
