Novice cook needs advice, raw egg whites................................

I have made coconut ice for the first time from a very old book, well from 1993 which is old enough!

It is a recipe that doesn't require cooking, which I why I choose it but it uses raw egg white. Is it ok to use it raw, or has advice changed since the book was written?

Was thinking of selling it at a christmas bazaar and don't want to poison anyone

Thanks

As far as I know raw egg white ok EXCEPT for certain groups such as young children, pregnant women, because of the risk of salmonella. Might be wary of selling it for that reason.

FSA guidance:
Eating raw eggs, or eggs with runny yolks, or any food containing these, can cause food poisoning especially for anyone who is:

  • very young (babies to toddlers)
  • elderly
  • pregnant
  • already unwell

This is because some eggs contain salmonella bacteria, which can cause serious illness, especially for anyone in these groups. So if you are preparing food for anyone in these groups always make sure eggs are cooked until the white and yolk are solid.

ok that shoudl be ok then. Was going to label anything I make to say what it is and what's in it as I know lots of people are allergic to eggs and things.

So as long as I make people aware it should be fine. Doubt many kids would want to eat coconutice or truffles and things.

Thanks

Salmonella is very rare in the UK now as all UK-based chickens are vaccinated. It's only a risk if you buy eggs from chickens abroad IYSWIM.

lots of 'value' type eggs come from non-
uk sources

I've found another 'simple' recipe without egg so will try that one!

I'm sure the sugar boiling/testing sounds more complicated than it is in reality but i just know mine'd end up burnt Need to stick to simple recipes

Thank you for all your replys. I was worried about using raw egg.

Personally I wouldn't sell them if there's raw egg white in them

I agree that's why if i sold them with egg in i'd put it on a label. It's fine now though as I have a recipe without it so I feel much happier.

Just have to eat up my first 'test' batch now Going to be the size of a house by christmas
