When I was at Uni I had an indian friend. I went to her friends for dinner once and we had something which I can't remember the name of. It was minced beef and peas and onions with some herbs/spices but not in any kind of sauce. I suppose it was a bit like a cottage pie with no potatoes!! I really want to make it. Anyone got any ideas/recipes?

mince beef? Are you sure it wasn't lamb? Most indians are hindu and don't eat beef.

It sounds like keema, but I've not heard of that being made with beef. I can dig out a recipe for that if you want. It is spiced mince and peas.

It could have been lamb. I thought it was pork that wasn't eaten (yes I am crap!!) I think it probably was keema that sounds familiar. A recipe would be great.

This is the recipe I use, below. you can do all sorts with it really, stuff naans with it, wrap it up in tortillas, or even hollow out aubergines, grill them and put it it in that.

3 tbsp corn oil
2 med onions
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tbsp ground coriander
2 cloves garlic, minced
2tbsp fresh minced ginger
4 tbsp natural yoghurt
2lb lamb mince
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1.5 tsp salt

heat oil, fry onions for 6-7 mins til browned. Add the cumin and coriander, and stir til coated. add the ginger and garlic, fry for a min. Reduce the heat and add the yoghurt, a tbsp at a time until it is absorbed. turn heat back up and add the meat, turmeric and cayenne pepper, stir and cook for about 5 mins. add about 2 cups of water, salt and the peas, and simmer gently for about 20 mins.

add finely chopped green chillis, garamasala, mint and coriander to garnish to taste. cook for further 10 mins. The water should be absorbed, but don't let it dry out completely.

muslims don't eat pork, indians are mostly hindu and don't eat beef.

Thankyou so much. I am such an ignoramus!! I can just about remember the 'rules' for catholics let alone any other religions. I fear one day I'm going to really offend someone!!

rules for catholics?? Now there, I am totally ignorant! My dp is indian, hence I know more about that and about delish indian cookery.

mistypeaks · 15/11/2007 16:15

Ah yes the catholic rules - No meat on Fridays (supposed to be fish. It was originally just good friday but seems to be every friday for the more 'devout'). And i always say you can do whatever you like as long as you're sorry afterwards, feel guilty and confess!!!
I am now going to remember you for more delish recipes - so beware!!!
