Help! Children in Need bake sale - something I can do with my ds

To all you seasoned MN bakers out there: my ds' nursery is having a Children in Need bake sale on Friday, and I'd love to make and bring something that me and ds have cooked together. Somehow I have developed the notion that an important part of motherhood is making cakes and cookies with the children, but I am rather domestically challenged so it isn't something we've managed to do yet. I would really like to make something for this sale but went through my recipes last night and couldn't find anything that looked both nice and simple enough. Ds is only 14 mo. so his 'help' is going to be nominal at best, so it needs to be something very simple and very quick ... Any ideas would be appreciated!!

how about chocolate crisppy cakes, melt chocolate and stir in crispies.

or mae biscuits on your own and get ds to decorate a he is quite young

little cakes you could make - I can find you an easy recipe if you want? put some glace icing on the top and your ds could decorate them with different things like mini marsh mellows, chocolate sprinkles, 100's and 1000's etc.

Sticky Blobs Makes 24 - these come out golden yellow "blobs" like a cross between a biscuit and a muffin, with a red blob in the middle (red nose, y'see)

225 g (8 oz) Self Raising Flour
pinch salt
100 g (4 oz) margarine
100 g (4 oz) caster sugar
1 medium egg, beaten
milk to mix
jam

1 Heat oven to 200ºC, 400ºF, Gas Mark 6. Grease a baking tray.

2 Mix the flour and salt, rub in fat and stir in the sugar.

3 Mix to a stiff dough with the egg and the milk.

4 Roll into walnut sized balls and make a hole in the centre by pressing in your thumb. Place on a baking tray.

5 Fill each hole with the jam and bake for about 15 minutes until golden brown.

6 Place on a wire rack to cool but not IMMEDIATELY as the jam is like napalm and when it falls out of hte hole in the bottom it EFFING hurts.

it's children in need rather than red nose though mamaG

they are delicious and EASY

Scones are quite simple and you can add fruit or leave them plain.

8oz flour
4 level teaspoons baking powder
1oz sugar
1-2oz margerine or butter
good ponch salt
milk to mix

sieve together flour, salt, baking powder
rub in the butter, add the sugar
mix to a soft rolling consistency with the milk
roll out and cut into required shapes (this is where your lo can help)
place on an ungreased tray, but i usually put greaseproof paper down
bake near the top of a very hot oven (I have a fan oven and i put it up to 220degreesc) for about ten minutes
to test if they are cooked press firmly at the sides, they should feel firm

Oooh these are great ideas thanks!! At the moment I am torn between chocolate cornflake cakes (as have cornflakes but not crispies - had forgotten these existed!) and the sticky blobs which look v. easy - could do the blob slightly off-centre and make it reminiscent of Pudsey's kerchief!

Any more for any more? (I will of course report back with results!)

how about coconut pyramids

2 stiffly beaten egg whites
6oz dessicated coconut
cherries
3oz castor sugar
1 desertspoon of cornflour unless making chocolate pyramids, in which case add 1 rounded dessert spoon of cocoa powder

mix coconut, cornflour and sugar together
work into the egg whites until a firm mixture
form into pyramids with your fingers and place on a well greased tray
bake in the centre of a very moderate oven (around 160-180degreesc, 350degreesf or gas mark 3) until pale golden brown on top (around 15-20 mins). Handle carefully until cold and decorate with cherries and melted chocolate

MamaG · 14/11/2007 12:29

you MUST do the sticky blobs, I insist

systemsaddict · 14/11/2007 12:59

Leaning towards sticky blobs for Friday as they look the easiest, but have ordered ingredients for several of these (doing the online ASDA today) and will try them out over the next few weeks, if ds likes his first go at baking that is. This is bringing back lots of memories of things my Mum did with us, thanks!

Thanks guys - I Have Baked! And now I feel like a proper mother Went for the sticky blobs in the end. Didn't have any of the right equipment so they were mixed in a salad spinner bowl and cooked on a roasting tin - hopefully they won't be too redolent of last week's garlic roast chicken ... but I've done it! and have two boxes to take in to nursery tomorrow. They are very nice too, I tested the slightly burned ones as quality control

However ds has just thrown up all over his cot, so there's a possibility I might have to eat them all myself tomorrow instead if he's still unwell in the morning ... ah well, silver lining to every cloud
