Vegetarian dinner party ideas for teens

Dd wants to have friends over for dinner for her birthday, would like them all to get dressed up and have a dinner party type thing.

I need ideas of what to serve. I will buy some canapes. Was thinking of an individual pavlova for dessert as I can make that in advance. I want it to look good but be easy.

Some ideas here

The roast sweet potato and onion tart, spinach and ricotta rotolo & melty mushroom wellingtons look nice -I haven’t even scrolled much further down and already my mouth is watering!

Asparagus with vinaigrette dressing for a starter at this time of year.

M&S do some individual puff pastry tarts, tomato & mozzarella, onion & goat cheese that look pretty but no effort. Serve with mixed green vegetables.

Or ready made fresh pasta, perhaps tortellini, with a creamy mushroom and herb sauce added at the end of cooking.

What sort of age are they? Alcohol free cocktails maybe? Sounds like fun!

I absolutely love the Waitress recipe for individual mushroom and chestnut puddings with red wine gravy.
They aren't really very springy though if that's a factor but could still be good with asparagus.
There's some lovely ideas over on the fennel thread if she likes fennel.
Another idea could be spanakopita?

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/04/2021 17:26

Waitrose, stupid autocorrect.

AdaColeman · 29/04/2021 17:47

Oh I was just coming back to suggest a Greek night, so YY to spanakopita, stuffed tomatoes, aubergine parmigiana, various vegetable fritters etc.

Feta cheese pasties with honey drizzled over for starters.

Truffle mac n cheese www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/food/recipes/a549828/luxury-truffle-mac-and-cheese/

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/04/2021 19:07

Oooh, I like the sound of the pasties, do you have a recipe AdaColeman?

Overdueanamechange · 29/04/2021 19:12

What are you thinking in terms of type of food? A veggie curry with veg samosas, bajhis, poppadoms and dips with other picky bits/ sides is always nice and easy. Italian could be a big veggie lasagne with garlic bread, salads and anti pasti.

I like the idea of a tart type thing again I can make in advance. She really wants it to be like a restaurant type meal rather than sharing food.

Just wondering if she ought to check with them all first regarding likes/dislikes

Love the non alcoholic cocktail idea too

I would definitely get her to run a few options through her friends, I’ve met plenty of fussy teens!
For that reason I probably go with a fairly simple dish that can be jazzed up a bit! If she wants restaurant style plating then go with it but maybe make some of the sides self serve.
Maybe chicken in prosciutto with a stuffing (garlic cream cheese, herb butter etc.
Potato dauphinois or gratin.
Tenderstem broccoli, green beans, baby carrots.

And whatever you serve sprinkle some herbs on! Teens mistake herbs for posh! Oh and finish with after dinner mints!

I’d go for a beautiful table setting, flowers, candles, fairy lights, cloth napkins, nice glasses, good playlist etc

@AtleastitsnotMonday that sounds nice (other than the chicken don't think dd would forgive me!)

Will get her to run the menu by everyone. I think she wanted it to be a surprise but that won't be great if they don't like it.

Love that herbs = posh, will give the meal a good sprinkling Grin

Sorry to be slow to reply @IHaveBrilloHair

I haven't got a recipe, but I use ready made filo pastry, a mix of feta cheese and whatever else is available parmesan, gouda etc, plus some herbs, often oregano or thyme.

I usually make triangles for convenience, (they look like samosas) and serve with a dark honey to drizzle over them. I had them served like that in Crete many years ago.

Have a look at "my greek dish . com" they have a recipe for "Greek Feta Cheese Triangles" which is very like my pastries. Hope you enjoy them!

Sorry! Completely missed the veggie bit, possibly my least helpful suggestion ever!
I’ll try again
halloumi, I do it with either jewelled cous cous or roasted new potatoes and a couple of nice salads.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 30/04/2021 21:29

That should say hasselback halloumi!
