Can't decide between this one from lakeland or this one which is reccomended in Olive mag. Any ideas? It's a gift for my bro for Christmas.

Well,

I got the one from lake land for my parents.

It ok, simple and safe to use aslong as you can maintain and fluid motion! Only porblem, is that there are fixed sizes but they probably the most popular sizes.

I have to say that have a "proper mandolin" which I would never be without. very sharp but great becuase it is completly adjustable.

I suppose it depends what you want it for?

HTH.

great thanks, DB was making vegetable 'crisps' and they were too thick, so thought it would be a good gift. He's a good cook and think he would like a 'proper mandolin', so think perhaps based on what you've said, I'll give the lakeland a miss.
What's yours like? What do you think of the second one I linked to? Is that a proper mandolin?

Oops, came on to give my advice on the purchase of a musical instrument . I was thinking "OMG, why would anyone buy a mandolin from Lakeland??"

IAmTheWalrus · 13/11/2007 14:34

Hang on i'll go and find a link

If he is a good cook he will love a "proper mandolin"

Think the lake land one will not give him a thin enough slice.

Hi

try this

It is a nice compromise and about the same proce as the lakeland one. Thought that budget might be important.

Also has the safety aspect of a gard to hold what ever you are slicing. The blades are so sharp (safe that way) but if you stop concentrating, very easy with a LO. You can end up with very bloody carrots! The cuts would never be deep but because they are so clean they can bleed.

Mine was a bit more expensive around £45.oo and no guard but I'm an ex chef so I like my kitchen equipment!

Its a very good site for bits and pieces for cooking in general so you might be able to pick up someother ideas.

If not let me know and I will find you a link to the one I have.

HTH

Thanks Stary, that looks great! Definite possibility. Was wondering if you could post a link to your one as would really like to see it, and try to work out which he would prefer. Many thanks for your help.

Hi

No problem.

this Is the one I have.

But I didn't pay that for it!

I will have a look in the morning and see if I can find where I got it from. Was £45 Plus P and P I'm sure.

But on the flip side, they have a good selection!

Hope your DH appreciates all the thought you've put in!

Hi

Sorry the best I can find on line is this But that is without a safety gaurd

But if you don't feel to offended then there is this ebay

HOpe that helps!

I'll try again in the morning.

Ps the Ebay one gives a good idea about what it will do!

funnypeculiar · 13/11/2007 22:56

sorry, but had to bump this as every time I read it I have this lovely vision of mn-ers happily playing on their mandolins across the world.

I've got the Pampered Chef one as I'm a Pampered Chef consultant. BUt, having had a different one before, the Pampered CHef one does have the sigificant benefit of having a finger guard that makes the cutting blade active - you can't use it without the finger guard so its safe for all those of us with children. If you're interested, I can give you a link to my site!

IAmTheWalrus · 13/11/2007 23:08

Stary, I feel like it's you who has gone to all the trouble and not me, but it is greatly appreciated. Many Thanks. I think I am going to buy the ebay one, so don't worry about finding other links. Many many thanks.
mistlethrush, I would love to look at the pampered chef site; have googled and can't find it. not sure non optional finger guard thing will be that desirable, but bet I'll find other things on there which would be fab. Many thanks in advance

No Problem

I've had a look through my paper work. Think the prices have just gone up!

Some people get offended if you suggest ebay but it was such a good price I thought it was worth a look.

Hope your DH cooks you lots of yummy things.

NotQuiteCockney · 14/11/2007 11:54

I have the Zyliss one, it is fine. Kinda annoying in places, and I do think about getting a more adjustable one, but it does the job just fine, and is good.

The guard is all very well in theory, but I basically never use it.

mistlethrush · 15/11/2007 22:23

try www. pamperedchef .biz/ sarahrushton - that's my website on pampered chef site. Please tell me what you think - constructive criticism much appreciated as I've only just got one...
