Looking for recipes that have a few simple ingredients that make something fantastic. Looking for inspiration for tea that I can get ingredients in village, small tesco express, small coop.

I made this koshari recipe recently and it blew me away.

Whitegrapewine · 23/04/2021 14:09

chicken, onion, peppers made into kebabs. Marinade in honey and soy sauce mixed. Tastes amazing and even fussy kids like it.

Omelette with mushrooms and cheese.

Pasta with a simple, well made tomato sauce. Add a hint of chilli, fresh basil and lots of black pepper. A cheesy garlic bread on the side. I like the garlic bread slices and grate my own Parmesan on them.

I know you have decided ,but I made this biryani last night as I had a squash kicking about the fridge. It was very tasty.

I make a very quick soup based on one from Ottolenghi Simple. 1 onion, 1 tin coconut milk, 1 tin tomatoes, 150g red lentils, 2 teaspoons of curry powder, 600ml water. So easy and very tasty and satisfying.

Khichari would probably easier and you could add whatever you want to it for flavour.
iklboo · 23/04/2021 17:10

Omelette with mushrooms and cheese.

Each to their own but I wouldn't class that as fantastic myself.

Depends how you make it.

This pasta recipe always amazes me with how good it tastes even though the ingredients are so simple - it’s from a 1990s Sainsbury’s recipe card my mum picked up!

Briam. I mostly follow this one mylittleexpatkitchen.blogspot.com/2011/09/briam.html
But pay attention to information about the layering order (from this as well as a check on a couple of other versions of the recipe) - it's more a set of instructions than a set recipe. It is amazing cold the next day, but smells so good you want to eat it really soon.

This is also very good, but instead of pulping to make soup I tend to make the roasted tomatoes into a sauce for pasta or a pizza and chuck olives into it:

Ormally · 23/04/2021 17:35

The peanut butter satay sauce from here is also very nice and can be used as a marinade. I never had a recipe that had coconut milk or tomato paste involved, the 'thinner' liquid was just the water with the soy sauce in, and it worked fine:

mammmamia · 23/04/2021 21:51

OP I would be interested to hear how the koshari turned out. I’ve never heard of it.

drspouse · 23/04/2021 22:00

Cake. Don't really think the ingredients would taste of much separately.

Peckhampalace · 23/04/2021 22:21

Pan haggerty
www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/panhaggerty_93163 potatoes, onions, bacon, carrots and cabbage. Substitute any greens. As long as there is stock cube/gel and some herbs it is easy, tasty and more than the sum of its parts.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 23/04/2021 22:38

I always feel tomatoes, avocado, mozarella and a little bit of olive oil and basil and s+p is like a sort of alchemy, but it's not really the right time of year for it and your local shop is unlikely to have nice enough tomatoes Grin.

sashh · 24/04/2021 07:31

I have 2 slow cookers, I make this in the smaller one.

2 chicken breasts sliced (or goujons)
1 pot of crème fresh
1 tin of Campbells condensed mushroom soup
a few sliced mushrooms or one sliced leek (or both)
You don't need seasoning because of the soup

Stick them all in the sc (or you could use a pan but you might have to add some water)

I have one breast with rice day 1 and then put the left overs in a foil dish and add a pastry top to make a pot pie that I usually freeze.

Imtoooldforallthis · 24/04/2021 08:07

Update, made koshari for tea last night, it was very nice, not sure it blew my mind. I had to use a packet of lentils. But certainly met the brief, the onions were delicious I could of eaten more of them, but I did seem to use a lot of pans.
