Supermarket value and quality

Which supermarket do you rate highest please for value and quality between Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda and Morrison's? We currently shop at Sains but I think we need to think about getting our weekly bills down if we can, but ideally not if it means a massive drop in quality. Thanks

I'd say that order is correct for my local stores. Main shop from Sainsburys, then Tesco & Waitrose for things S. does not stock.

However, Aldi is worth checking. Their meat & fish is good quality & always cheaper - but they have a limited range. I'm not so keen on their fruit & veg, doesn't seem to last as long. Laundry stuff is good, & so is own-label general grocery.

I do my main shop in Lidl and perhaps buy 2 or 3 things from Sainsbury's. We're lucky in that our Lidl has great fruit, veg, meat, and fish.

I find things like apples, tomatoes and meat have a much nicer flavour from Sainsbury's. Tesco isn't as nice and not much cheaper. I'm trying to get my food bills down too but no matter where I try we end up back at marks and Spencer or Sainsbury's because the food isn't as nice elsewhere. Hope someone has some tips here

SummaLuvin · 13/04/2021 18:28

My Aldi is very well stocked and good quality, only the odd niche ingredients I can't get there.

If you feel loyal to Sainsburys and don't want to go elsewhere could you look at changing your eating habits slightly? Cheaper cuts of meat (chicken thigh, not breast), frozen rather than fresh fish, dried legumes rather than canned, use lentils more...

CommanderBurnham · 13/04/2021 18:31

I'd put Lidl after Sainsbury's.

I do the same as you, we have a ‘flagship’ Lidl store built about three years ago, it’s a lovely huge, cool and uncluttered space and also a Mark’s and Spencer’s food hall so all the basics from Lidl and a few nice things from m & S, Lidl is great for salad bags, tomatoes veg, milk cheese, butter etc and their nuts are brilliant, there isn’t actually much I don’t get from Lidl and I do a lot of my own cooking so it’s great for ingredients. I don’t eat meat/fish so can’t comment on that but I understand their ham in the packets is good, there is a really big selection though. And there is another big Aldi being converted from a staples store nearby soon so I am lucky to get the choice Cant beat Sainsbury’s bakery bread though - it’s the best so I top up there as well.

For quality, Sainsburys, Morrison's, Tesco, Asda in that order.
For cheapness, Asda, Morrison's, Tesco, Sainsburys in that order.
Morrison's would be my pick if I was budget conscious.

I tend to go Asda because there is a huge store by us that stocks everything including clothes. However, it's always so busy that it sets my anxiety off! Found a really nice Aldi by my daughters school, quality is just as nice if not nicer and value for money. I get meat from local butcher rather than supermarket so that suits.

Roselilly36 · 13/04/2021 18:51

I tend to use Waitrose, their essential range is excellent, Iceland for top ups, and local co op which is excellent and stocks lots of local produce. Seems to work well for my family.

Roselilly36 · 13/04/2021 18:52

Oh and Aldi too if I feel up to going to a store to shop, my other orders are all online.

I've been using Morrison's since lockdown and been impressed.
moochingtothepub · 13/04/2021 18:56

Lidl and Aldi are considerably cheaper but I do like Morrison's for fresh fish and meat.

DogsAreShit · 13/04/2021 19:01

Morrisons is the best value I think. It's not the cheapest but it's as good if not better quality (for some items) as the more expensive ones.

Only in-store though. Their delivery is awful, both in terms of range and quality.

coronafiona · 13/04/2021 19:10

Asda/ Tesco are better than the others for fruit/ veg where I live but I find aldi so much cheaper I shop there for most things abs top up in asda once a month

karmakameleon · 14/04/2021 10:41

We have access to all the major supermarkets and I choose Asda for my main shops with top ups from M&S and Waitrose for some treats. I find that although Asda quality isn’t always great, it’s cheaper to buy branded from Asda than it is to buy own brand from Sainsbury’s. On the odd occasion I do go to Sainsbury’s the food is great but I have a heart attack at the bill. I won’t set foot in Tesco but perhaps our local store is particularly grim. I like Lidl and Aldi but struggle to do a full shop in either.

The one thing I can’t stand in Asda is their meat so every few months I get a Waitrose delivery for meat to put in the freezer.

Hughbert · 14/04/2021 12:58

I shop at Waitrose but if for any reason I can't, or I fancy a change, Morrisons is my next go-to. I find Sainsbury's expensive and Tesco scabby. I don't know where there is an Asda, so couldn't comment.
