Mini 'adult' forks - are they ok for DS (17months) to use?

I let DS have mini versions of adult cutlery for him to eat his food with and he seems to enjoy copying mummy and daddy and is eating well with it.

However, my mum today said that it was dangerous to give him a fork like that and he should be on plastic forks etc and then move to mini adult versions when he was older again as he could poke himself in eye etc....

What do other mnetters think? I do sit with him while he's eating so he's not left in the hi chair with the fork at all and he never walks around with it - only ever has it in the chair....

HE'll be fine.

Ds used them from that age - as long as they're supervised.

HOw's he doing atm? Still being a little sod?

LadyOfWaffle · 11/11/2007 16:22

DS has a baby metal one, it's rounded off abit for him - if that's what you mean that's fine, but I wouldn't use an adult dessert fork, they are too sharp.

TheMadHouse · 11/11/2007 16:23

both mine (16 months and 2.6)used forks early, they found it easy to stab than scoop. They have metal ones, as the plastic ones are cack.

My friend has just bought her DS a fork and spoon combined - but I do not get it, it looks like a draining spoon

ArmadilloDaMan · 11/11/2007 16:24

yeah ime plastic ones don't pick up the food properly so just put them off/make it harder.

CrookshanksinJimmyChoos · 11/11/2007 16:24

Well my mum has been visiting this weekend and when she left to go out yesterday am, he had a mass tantrum and before I could do anything, he ran over and bit me very badly on the leg...I was too busy hopping around in pain to even tell him off!! Broke the skin and everything!

I'm being firm with him and giving him time out, chance to apologise etc so I'll just keep plodding on with that and see how it goes - I'm sure its just a phase but man - am I copping it!

Gotta dash - DH is on nights tonight so have to get all the ironing etc done while he is around to watch DS...will be back later though!

Lady of Waffle - its a proper baby set - not adult cutlery - got a jungle motif as well

Oh right then, when you said adult I thought you meant a little dessert fork! DS is attempting to use his metal baby set, it's fine - the plastic ones he had were actually worse IMO, looked quite pointy and sharp.

Ellie - I got mine from Tesco in a little tub thing so you can take it out, it had a knife fork & spoon.

ArmadilloDaMan · 11/11/2007 19:13

Asda do a couple of different sets as well.

ELLIELULU · 11/11/2007 19:13

ladyofwaffle

the set you got were they full metal or had plastic handles, where in tesco would they be, normal utensil aisle or on baby?

i will look next week

thanks

LadyOfWaffle · 11/11/2007 19:15

Grippy blue and green handles (or you could get pink and orange I think) in a green and blue tub. They were with all the beakers/bowls etc. in the baby aisle.

ELLIELULU · 11/11/2007 19:18

armadillo and ladyofwaffle

thanks for this

Anna8888 · 11/11/2007 19:25

He'll be fine. My daughter has used a metal fork for ages, since she was about 15 months.

Seona1973 · 11/11/2007 19:34

my 13 month old has been using metal pronged forks for a couple of months - I have never used plastic forks for either of my lo's as they are crap!! He uses ones that dd used to use which have plastic handles (she doesnt want to use them now as she is a big girl (just turned 4)). We got some from boots, some from woolworths, etc

Ellie - mine was a set from Whittards as a gift from a friend - had a matching bowl and place mat as well - its lovely as he talks about the animals when he's eating!

Relieved to hear am not only one using him! The way I see it, they will have to know how to use them for pre school etc so why not start now!

Lapin - the tantrums are spectacular ...he's inherited DH's famous family temper - flares up very quickly but dies down just as fast.....as a Muslim I can't reach for a G&T but please...give me something for my nerves!!! lol!!!
