Sunday dinners that aren't a roast

Bored of having a roast dinner every Sunday and want to try something different that doesn't take ages or require unheard of ingredients!

Any ideas would be appreciated Smile

Anything traybaked! The roasting tin cookbooks are good for this.

I often shove chicken things in a tray with whatever wants using up (onions, peppers, courgette, aubergine, tomatoes). Throw in loads of garlic, basil/oregano & maybe some chilli.

Serve with garlic bread &/or potato wedges, which you can cook in the oven along with the chicken, & loads of salad (which IME the kids quite like making).

Make loads as you can stir any leftovers through cooked pasta, top with grated cheese mixed with breadcrumbs & that's a tasty pasta bake sorted for next day.

Same principle for salmon.

Moussaka.

HelenHywater · 10/04/2021 18:56

A big chilli
Lamb Shanks
Lasagne or Moussaka
Salmon en croute with salads
A baked fish with salads
Anything Ottolenghi with little salads
an Iranian/Turkish spread (meat, rice, salads, breads)
A pie with mash
Oh yes I cooked a delicious Dishoom curry the other week.

A barbecue
There are lots of alternatives to a roast dinner!

Slow cooked ham in coke
Lump of Ham in slow cooker
Top up with coke
Roughly chop an onion
Bay leaf
Cook on low for 8 hours
Chuck in the oven with a bit of mustard powder and honey or maple syrup for about 20 mins
Serve with chips/ roast potatoes or baked potatoes, peas, mushrooms, tinned pineapple maybe ready made Yorkshire's.
We usually have the leftovers the day after with chips and egg!

Where I come from Sunday is synonymous with a wonderful, aromatic Chicken Curry which must include potatoes, served with fluffy white rice - and upon consumption of which the whole household must then retire for an afternoon nap.

Years later, living in the UK as one half of a mixed Asian British household - with mixed race kids - we have made this our norm too. On Saturdays we do the British thing and do a roast. On Sunday’s we have our Curry and rice.

Toad in the hole
Pot pie/pie and mash
Shepherds pie/ cottage pie
Fish pie
Lasagne or cannelloni
Enchilada bake/Mexican lasagne
Steak

We've started having quiches and salads and cold nibbles, posh buffet type thing on Sundays for the same reason. It's great because we eat the leftovers for supper. Much more summery. Love tabouli with it. (Sorry if spelling atrocious.)

Salmon/beef/mushroom Wellington
Tacos and lots of sides
Fish Pie

RedLimoncello · 10/04/2021 19:53

Ooh @Navigationcentral you absolutely have to post your recipe!! Sounds amazing 😋

Navigationcentral · 10/04/2021 20:13

Haha! @RedLimoncello - sure. This expat woman does an amazing job of it so I will leave you to her version of it - (it has the usual long story before the recipe which you can ignore or browse for context)

Steak pie or chicken pie served with homemade chips and gravy roast parsnips and peas.

partofyoupoursoutofme · 15/04/2021 03:52

We have traditional British food on Sunday, roast, stew and dumplings, cottage pie, fish pie, toad in the hole, sausage and mash. Also a traditional pudding like crumble, rice pudding, bread butter pudding etc. The rest of the time we eat vegetarian so Sunday is a meat fest.

partofyoupoursoutofme · 15/04/2021 03:55

@imtoooldforallthis Adding roast parsnips on the side of anything makes it seem like a Sunday lunch Grin

Embracingthechaos · 15/04/2021 04:00

Pie.

My personal favourite is steak and ale, but pretty much any hearty pie will do. Serve with either creamy mash or home made oven wedges.

custardbear · 15/04/2021 04:42

We often have salmon Wellington so just pastry, salmon, some sort of herby, creamy cheesy type sauce made from whatever nice things ate in the cupboard, wrap, cut pastry holes, egg wash and oven
Aldi do a perfectly nice one already made on their freezer section
