Give me some inspiration for desserts/puddings that aren't sugar loaded

... if there is such a thing 😆

DD6 and DD3 went to dentists today and although it was good the dentists told me about enamel developmenr issues with DD3 and start of a cavity with DD6 (trying not to beat myself up about it but feel awful). They are very good teeth brushers so it's sugar-related.

We are an excessive snacking family and I have definitely been bad with it since lockdown 2020. They like fruit and veg and eat healthy dinners minus the odd McDs. To add, my girls do not eat crazy junk food but every snack is fruit based (fruit yo, fruit bake), biscuits, crisps (they always share a pack when they have one which isn't everyday) and granny brings them chocolate most days- they don't get to eat it each time it's given to them but is eaten more often than we would like. DM (Granny) is very supportive and gets that she needs to join in with me and DH in giving the girls less junky snacks and just less snacks overall. They have one cup of squash per day and mostly drink water and milk.

Besides shopping more sensibly I want to bring back pudding to after meals. This is to bulk out the meals themselves and hopefully edge them away from moaning about snacks. Any ideas on fun or different puddings which aren't cakes and chocolaty things?

Also, any good new snack ideas are most welcome.

Would they tolerate cheese and biscuits as a dessert?

Low sugar banana bread
Homemade apple sauce

Dairy based snacks are good like cheese strings, babybel or just cubes of cheddar, yoghurt (real stuff not fromage frais or low calorie).

Healthy puddings

  • Greek yoghurt and berries
  • banana pancakes (just mushed banana and beaten egg mixed together and fried) with fresh fruit
  • frozen yoghurt or banana 'icecream' - just freeze skinned chunks of banana. Straight from the freezer to a blender, blitz to smooth and serve.

Strawberries and cream

MarieDelaere · 30/03/2021 17:59

I started liking savoury 'puddings' when I was younger. People still Hmm at me.

Corn on the cob
Cottage cheese on celery
Granary toast and marmite
Olives
Feta
Berries
Plain Greek yogurt
Avocado (nice mashed on toast)

And obviously crackers and cheese - you can try different kinds, including babyel and different flavours of primula.

Or instead of pudding, have a soup first course to bulk it out.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for the suggestions!

Some of these are a blast from the past weaning days! Just sat on the Morrisons app with them as they had dinner and we chose some natural yoghurt with fruit, some cheese selection packs along with crackers.

@MarieDelaere a starter would be a fab idea to try especially soup. I actually make pretty decent soup so should adjust some recipes for the girls.

Thanks again MNetters Smile

Jelly
‘Milk’ jelly (ie, jelly made with milk)
Yoghurts
Flapjack
Apple crumble
Fruit salad

MarieDelaere · 30/03/2021 18:43

@Standrewsschool, I forgot you can get sugar-free jelly. I believe it's completely sugar-free these days?

I’ve been making lots of profiteroles lately. The choux pastry can be make without sugar, cream inside can be left unsweetened, and then the only sweet bit is whatever you put on top, so maybe make some chocolate sauce using plain chocolate and cream. Delicious and low in sugar.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 30/03/2021 19:55

Or buy the frozen ones already filled with cream and make your own sauce!

Frokni · 30/03/2021 21:13

@MarkRuffaloCrumble great name!

Have been wanting to try making profiteroles too. Good idea, thanks!

Ha ha thank you! I’m a fan of all types of pudding Grin

This is the choux recipe I make for mine - I use strong white bread flour for a firmer shell.
