When is it ok to try them out on it?? DD is 11 months old. No known nut allergies in the family.

I waited until dd was 2

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 09/11/2007 12:54

Thank you for replying so quickly. Was there any reason for that?

Not really just thought 2 sounded about right

goingfor3 · 09/11/2007 12:57

Both dd's had it before 12 months as dp has it on toast for breakfast most mornings and he gave them some without thinking.

Advice around peanuts is pretty divided. Latest things I've been reading suggest that earlier introduction in fact reduces the chances of allergy. The number of nut allergies in the UK hugely increased between 2001-5; the advice to stop eating peanuts in pregnancy came in 1998 so could in fact have caused the increase in allergies. Other countries where this advice isn't given haven't seen a similar increase in nut allergies.

my ds was two when he had a small amount of peanut butter. Ended up in an ambulance. No history of nut allergy in my family at all. I though it would be ok because he had been fine with honey nut cheerios.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 09/11/2007 13:12

I never paid any attention to the advice regarding peanut butter. I ate it throughout two pregnancies and introduced smooth peanut butter when weaning. There are no signs of allergies in my children - and no history in my family of asthma.

You have to do what you are comfortable with and do some research if you are not sure.

dd had it from very young as, like goingfor3, I had it on toast and would give her some etc.

Wasn't it Nigella who took her dcs to A&E waiting room and fed them peanuts etc to see if they had a reaction, and if they did, they were it the right place?

StrawberryMartini · 09/11/2007 13:15

When you try it, make sure it's in the morning/lunchtime, and remember if they have an allergy they are more likely to have a reaction the second time they have it.

Mine were 1 year olds, and I startd with almond butter as it is less allergenic I think... don't know though.
Allergies that severe are very rare, and they are less able to cope at that age due to immature immune systems and smaller lungs/airways ect. So err on he side of caution, but if there are no known allergies in the family, it should be okay from about 1 year. Loosen it with some liquid though - as it's sticky and a bi of a chocking hazard!

Seona1973 · 09/11/2007 16:10

my dd had it from around 1 year and ds had it from 8 months. I think new advice is to give it earlyish in weaning rather than hold off as before:

ds has had it since 14 months, no family allergies. Smooth type though, and check the labels and make sure there is no added sugar in, I buy Tesco's own brand smooth (blue bottle) the reason for smooth is, the nuts comes out whole at the other end!

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 09/11/2007 18:37

I've eaten peanut butter a couple of times actually and I'm still breastfeeding - would she have reacted to that if she was allergic?

OP posts:
shrooms · 10/11/2007 00:30

Yeah she probably would have, but I wouldn't be 100% sure as it's amazing what the body can sometimes filter out.
