Defrosting raw king prawns in under 6 hours?

I stupidly just bought some raw king prawns with the intention of eating them tonight. If I leave them at room temperature will they be defrosted by 6/7pm? Or can I defrost them quicker without poisoning us all? They will be cooked into fritters when defrosted, if that makes a difference

Just put them in cold water, change it at intervals of a few minutes, they will be thawed in no time.

They thaw out really quickly. Tip them into a sieve/colander and rinse in cold/tepid water - they should be defrosted in less than an hour.

Put them in a colander in a bowl and run a cold tap over them for 10 mins - the water will defrost them.

By 7pm they'll definitely be defrosted unless you live at the North Pole!

Definitely cold water. Or, if you have a metal oven tray you’re not using this evening, put them on that. The metal distributes the temperature difference much better, between the frozen item & the warm air.

Brilliant, thanks everyone!

Do not use warm water - friend works in restaurant and prawns are binned if anyone does this

BIWI · 25/03/2021 14:54

I should qualify - I said 'tepid'. Tepid isn't warm, it's just 'not cold'.

Quite agree you shouldn't use warm water!

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 25/03/2021 15:09

Understood - cold water only!
