Expiry date Dec 2006 on a tin of kidney beans - can I still eat them?

Ingredients: Kidney beans and water.

Surely the whole point of tinned stuff is that it keeps for a bazillion years?

I think the problem with out of date tins is that the metal might have corroded and contaminated the contents ,thats why you shouldn't use rusty or dented tins.
On the other hand tins didn't even have expiry dates until relatively recently ,you'd just use your common sense.

If it was me I wouldnt feed it to children

But... then I'll have to have fajitas without kidney beans. I really fancied kidney beans. Maybe I'll just open and have a sniff.

Should prob be reasonably careful as am pg.

Wasn't there a story recently about an old couple who found a tin of chicken soup or something from WWII and they ate it and were fine! I think a lot of dating nowadays is to cover their backs, but as you're pregnant it's probably not worth the risk.

EmilyDavidson · 08/11/2007 17:59

Throw them away ,not worth taking the risk when you are pg

HeadHeartorHormones · 08/11/2007 17:59

It does. Carefully examine the empty tin. If there is no sign of corrosion I'd eat them.

ktmoomoo · 08/11/2007 18:00

dont eat them yukky

BroccoliSpears · 08/11/2007 18:06

Two yesses, two nos and a maybe. I was REALLY hoping for 46 YESses.

Fine. I'll sulk off to the kitchen and make fajitas with crappy old in-date borletti beans then. Hmph.

(And by "hmph", I naturally mean "thank you for taking the time to answer my question ")

Id eat them

have ehrd that you can still eat baked beans from the war so long as tin is in tact!

shrooms · 09/11/2007 00:00

I would. Food manufacturers are way over cautious on expiry dates. Canned stuff keep for ages, so 1 year out of date should still be fine, as lonf as the tin is not damaged, as mentioned.
