My SIL is due to give birth any day now and I'd like to drop off some meals when they come home from hospital. They have a very small freezer so I'm looking for something that they can have straight away without freezing it.

What are some good things to make, drive for an hour and drop off? Thank you all!!

We didn't have to drive for an hour but we did sort of get into the habit of making enough food for our meal that included SIL and BIL and then popping it round for them to microwave/ pop in oven as needed. Things that didn't come to any harm if they weren't eaten on the spot. A few examples:

Roast chicken (with whatever veg we were having - usually not roast potatoes but just new potatoes and regular steamed/boiled veg).

Pasta and whatever sauce so spaghetti bolognaise is an obvious one but our favourite sausage/spinach/tomato/fennel sauce with creme fraiche would probably have appeared at some point. I think it might also be when I was doing "red sauce" as a way to sneak additional vegetables into the kids a lot so I'd have done that too, definitely.

Definitely curries or stews worked well. I think with anything like that I'd usually just buy in a packet of instant rice for them to microwave, if I remember correctly.

If I was doing it now I'd do fajitas and just send over with tubs of the toppings and a packet of wraps.

Any form of casserole, curry, bourgignon. coq a vin type thing would work, or chilli.

Cottage pie
Lasagne
Macaroni cheese
Tuna pasta bake
Enchiladas
Sausage casserole
Chicken and apricot tagine
Pork with apples and shallots in cider
Any curry

Might be nice to take a few bags of ready your prepped veg, cous cous sachets, microwave rice pouches, bagged salad leaves to serve alongside.

Quiche - easy to transport in a baking tin and keeps well on the fridge for a few days. Perhaps a green salad to go with it.
Sausage rolls - nothing beats homemade, and they’re easy to eat one-handed while doing something else! Perhaps with a jar of chutney/pickle/relish to have with them.

I’d take them bits they can use to make quick meals - microwave rice sachets, gnocchi, nice pasta sauce, ready cooked chicken/salmon fillets, eggs - plus snack bits like cheese, nice crackers, malt loaf, bananas

For the very early days, anything that can eaten with one hand as babies seem to sense when their parents are eating and choose that time to need attention.

So things like shepherds pie or pasta bakes that don't need cutting and can be eaten with just a fork/spoon .
