Bought a small bottle knowing only that it's supposed to be very good for me. It tastes ... interesting ConfusedHmm.

When /how much/with what/why do I drink it ? Some wise Mumsnetter must know.

Personally I find the taste and smell overpowering on its own, but I’m fine with some chucked in a smoothie!

It just tastes like slightly tart drinking yoghurt to me, unless you got "water kefir"?

It's good for you because the bacteria in it can colonise your gastrointestinal tract unlike those is yoghurt and it has a polysaccharide in it that can reduce cholesterol and lower blood pressure. I have it for breakfast every day instead of yoghurt with frozen fruit that I stir in the night before to defrost or use it to make overnight oats.

I use it for overnight oats www.thecollectivedairy.com/recipe/coconut-kefir-overnight-oats/

I knew MN would know. Thank you ! So no chugging from the bottle then ? And what's kefir water? What I bought was very liquid. With bits in it Confused

soaked oats are great with it.
I put oat bran, crushed linseed, pumpkin seeds, raisins in it.

I have my own grains and have about half a cup of kefir a day.

orangenasturtium · 15/03/2021 11:51

Water kefir is water, sugar and fruit fermented with the same culture as milk kefir. It's like kombucha.

There's no reason why you shouldn't just drink it Grin I'm not sure about the bits, unless it has fruit in it? That doesn't sound right...

DolphinDreams · 15/03/2021 15:03

Oh no orange, don't tell me I've been drinking kefir that's gone off !!EnvyConfusedThat's exactly what it tastes like, but I thought that fermented, slightly rancid taste was all part of the experience. Because , yes, definitely bits floating in it, like milk that is turning.

I eat the thick yoghurt version for the Polish supermarkets. It's yummy. I can't get on with the drinkable types, they are rank.

redcandlelight · 15/03/2021 16:37

shake it. if it stands too much the solid bits and the whey separate out a bit.

it's yoghurty, sometimes a bit fizzy, sometimes smells a little like baby sick gosh, I'm really selling it Grin

for curry night I blitz kefir with a tin if mangos as a 'lassi' drink.

DolphinDreams · 15/03/2021 21:31

Yes, that's exactly it! Smells - and tastes - of baby sick !

Keep a bit of the bottle. Add milk and leave it out for 12-24 hours. It will make more kefir. Blend it with frozen fruit. It's delicious.

DolphinDreams · 16/03/2021 09:39

Downthefarm are you saying I can make my own kefir ???? How much kefir to roughly how much milk please ?

OP posts:
MiddletownDreams · 16/03/2021 09:56

@Downthefarm

Keep a bit of the bottle. Add milk and leave it out for 12-24 hours. It will make more kefir. Blend it with frozen fruit. It's delicious.

You can only do this a couple of times, before the cultures fizzle out; you really need the kefir grains. They look a bit like cottage cheese, but they're squishily solid. Water kefir grains are different, they look like cut up jelly. Milk kefir is ridiculously good for your gut, but it's a bit of acquired taste.

There's loads of sellers on eBay, if you want to make your own constant supply. Search for milk kefir grains.

Downthefarm · 16/03/2021 14:50

I only usually do a it a couple of time from each bottle. Yes @DolphinDreams , I just keep a tablespoon or so back and add milk. Semi skimmed, in my case!

Downthefarm · 16/03/2021 14:51

@MiddletownDreams I'll look out for those.

Have tried milk kefir grains and water kefir grains. Could not get on with milk kefir at all, found it disgusting tasting, yucky consistency and hard to separate the grains.

Water kefir on the other hand is delicious to me. Can add ginger etc to the second fermentation in the glass bottles and it tastes a bit like ginger beer and slightly fizzy. As a result I can drink a lot more of it
