Sunday dinner ideas

It’s the last Sunday for a while that we’ll all be at home together and I want to do a nice Sunday dinner with a pudding for this evening but my fussy children hate a roast. Does anyone have any ideas for a different meal that still feels Sunday dinner-ish?

Casserole or lamb shanks with roast potatoes and loads of veg.

Nigella's sticky toffee pudding.

Lasagne
Fish pie
Shepherd pie

What is it about a roast they don’t like? Could you swipe bits out eg have mash instead of roast potatoes etc.
Roast a chicken and have salad, bread, new potatoes etc with it

We are having lamb shanks. They can be braised so a bit more stew like than a roast. DS isn't keen on a roast but loves those. Hasselback potatoes and veg. Haven't decided on pud. Need to see what's in the baking cupboard!

Today we're having salmon in a creme fraiche and mustard sauce with peas and pasta followed by Jamaican ginger cake and custard.

The pudding makes it a bit more of a special meal as we very rarely have it, but I'll put the salmon pasta into a big bowl on the table and I'll serve up there instead. Again, just something a little different from the everyday plonking their plates in front of them style dining!

How about a pie? A nice big one in the middle of the table looks great and you can have the roast trimmings with it. And this is a great pud:

If pears aren't your thing you can use other fruit - I've substituted raspberries and cherries before and both worked well

Thanks for the ideas, it’s the vegetables they can’t stand, I seem to spend my life in a battle to get them to eat some!

We're having home made tapas tonight with lemon meringue roulade for pudding.

Toad in the hole with onion gravy

I often serve shepherds/cottage pie with peas and sweet corn to avoid the veg argument. I can get onion, leek, celery, carrot and tomato into the pie. Sometimes some parsnip or sweet potato mixed with normal potato for the topping. So a good variety and no complaints.

In the end I made a beef stew with a square of puff pastry on top to pretend that it's a pie with mash and veg which was grudgingly eaten! Followed with the Nigella pear and chocolate pudding kindly suggested by BigMamaFratelli above. Delicious, thank you!
