I am not sure whether this belongs in food or allergies so I am going to post it in both!
Dd is 6 months old and has very dry skin, however only last week did I notice her scratching it. A couple of days later her first tooth appeared and I was reassured that it was probably due to teething.
I became worried lat night when her skin appeared to 'flare up'. It was probably about an hour after her tea of banana with freshly squeezed orange juice and greek yoghurt which she loves, but her chest and tummy became red and hot as did her face became blotchy. The thing is she didn't seem distressed but by the time it came to having her bath she was also very itchy although her face had calmed down. I have slapped aqueous cream all over her and have been doing for a while now and I thought it was getting better, until last night.
I would really appreciate some advice please.

Were any of those foods new 2 her? Orange J. is cited as a common allergen.

MrsDoolittle · 29/10/2004 10:57

No. I have given her orange juice only in the last month and hadn't considered it a problem until now

But in theory allergies only occur after the first exposure, so this might be it. It sounds like an allergic reaction to me, so I guess I would tread carefully.

My old HV send that there is a type of infantile eczema they get when teething, it flares up before a tooth comes thru, they outgrow it around age 2... since then other people have told me that's rubbish... but, DS did have a funny dry patch on his back that behaved as she described.

Sorry I'm not much help ... for me would be a case of wait, watch & see.

Til now I have thought very much the same zebra. I am just getting upset that her skin seems so dry and I can't make it better

I am definitely not the font of all knowledge on this but besides going to a doctor, I had been told that Excema can flare up when the seasons change too. My DD started with dry patches of skin about 4 weeks ago. I cover her in shea butter several times a day and the patches seem to calm down and eventually go. She is also teething at the mo.

How old is your dd DillyDally? This doesn't look like eczema though

She is 15 months and it started off being dry patches of skin (about the size of a 10p piece) and then went red. It is quite localised (some on her cheek and others on her tummy).
I had thought it might be allergy to washing powder but switching to mildest forms of everything made it no better and her diet hadn't changed at all.

MrsDoolittle · 29/10/2004 11:45

You describe my experience too. Only this time it all over her tummy.
I have been told not to wory about it, by a GP (outside work), that it comes and goes and that eventually they grow out of it.
Doesn't stop me worrying though

If it helps at all, I worry too. All I can do is to keep her nails as short as possible to avoid the scratching and keep on with the cream. She doesn't seem to suffer though which makes me feel slightly better.

MrsDoolittle · 29/10/2004 12:48

Oh yes, I try that too - keeping her nails as short as possible. It's really hard to make them so they aren't sharp isn't it.
Still DillyDally, Thanks it's reassuring to know I am not the only one. Maybe it's not an allergy
