"Plastic" chicken slices - advice please

Had our Waitrose order yesterday.

Unfortunately, I've managed to order what looks like processed chicken breast in thin slices instead of a cooked chicken breast that's then just been sliced, iyswim.

I know that I should have bought proper chicken breasts and cooked and sliced them myself or, better still, got a whole chicken and jointed it etc
But I didn't Sad

I hate the texture of this sort of "plastic" meat; the ham's bad enough but the chicken is worse, imo.

I suppose I could still use it in sandwiches with lots of salad to disguise it.
Or it could be the cat's lucky few days.

But any ideas of how to make it more palatable?
I've wondered whether frying it might help...?

Fry it in some pesto. Makes a lovely brown crust and disguises the taste. We did this on my last caravan holiday when the site shop only had plastic meat available and it worked well with some pasta.

Eat it in a sandwich or throw it away. Why make it into a huge issue?

Or maybe in a 'melt' style baguette or panini, melted cheese and slices of onion disguises all sorts.

I'm on your cat's side. But if I didn't have a cat I'd dice it up and add it to soup or pasta.

Dice it up and make coronation chicken, completely disguised the taste and you’ve sandwich fillers for a few days (also hate the processed chicken, ordered it by accident a couple of times too!)

Chop and add to pasta or feed cat or fox!

ChancesWhatChances · 18/02/2021 09:49

@crystalcherry87 the only person making it into a huge issue is you, OP has asked for ideas on what to do with it and not everyone in the world agrees with chucking food away for no good reason. Perhaps you should think about that instead of sniping at posters?

I've already said I could make it into a sandwich (which is what I got it for).
But I'd be disguising it with other ingredients rather than having a nice chicken sandwich.

I'd rather not throw perfectly good (if not very nice) food away.

Didn't you notice this was in "Food/Recipes" not "AIBU?"?

Even actual chicken doesn't belong in pasta! Either sandwich with nice salad and salad cream or treat the cat (I'd lean towards treating the cat!).

Actually, some excellent ideas here, thank you Smile

The "melt" type of sandwich appeals, as does frying in pesto - never thought of adding pesto.
Perhaps I could make a sort of chicken BLT then.

(Don't worry about the cat, btw - I suspect she'll benefit too)

We call it dog chicken. It's only suitable for dogs, our cat is to discerning and refuses to eat it.

Not sure our mog is that discerning (although I wouldn't blame her)

If you cut it into fine strips and crisp it up with some garlic and onions it would go in a stirfry. I tend to use up sandwich ham like that in a chicken chow mein.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 18/02/2021 12:52

I think you need to cut it into really fine strips and combine with other ingredients to disguise the plastic texture. Maybe some finely sliced red onion, cucumber, peppers, a spoonful of mango chutney and some mayo. Then use to fill a pita, wrap or baguette.

purplecorkheart · 18/02/2021 14:51

Finely shred it and put it in an omelette. You could put it into a blender and make a kind of chicken spread/pate with some mayo, celery, gherkins, capers or whatever you like

Many thanks all - a lot of these sound v. promising.

And next time maybe I'll buy raw chicken breasts and cook them myself to be on the safe side.
