HELP! Dd (13months) won't eat any finger foods, going crazy...

My lovely, healthy dd is 13 months old and has won't put food in her own mouth. She's bitten rice cakes on a few occassions but seemed disgusted. She won't eat bread/ rusks/ steamed carrots/ soft fruit even if dipped in favourites like yoghurt. She'll just bat them away. She's fine with lumpy food-off a spoon, of course, and drinks well. But if she gets food on her fingers she'll complain and put the hand out for me to lick, but won't lick it herself. I am very encouraging and have eaten plenty of rice cakes myself to encourage her! I even offered chocolate buttons which she bit and refused and then fed to me!!! She has always been quite strong willed and decisive and I don't think there is anything wrong with her. But I wish she'd pick something up herself. Any advice?

Do you take her to a playgroup? My 14 month old's table manners have improved enormously since we have been going to play group, as she copies the older children. If everyone else is sat at the table eating at snack time, I am sure she will join in

Neither ds1 nor ds2 was into finger food at that age. Even sandwiches had to be forked or put on spoons. (Both hate rice cakes too.) They are excellent eaters now. Not compulsory to like finger or messy food, I guess!

I do take her to playgroups and she does see other babes (same age) eat finger foods, I'm hopeful that this will improve as she gets older and copies more. One of the shock moments of biting a rice cake was when she saw another baby do it! Although she still didn't like it.

It helps to know she's not the only babe to not be into finger foods. Thanks slng.

I'm planning to take her to messy play next week- so should be interesting. I just hope she finds it fun. And I guess i'll be able to tell her one day how she refused to try chocolate buttons!
