Do you own a Morphy Richards breadmaker? HELP ME PLEEEEASE!

DH gave me a Morphy Richards Homebake bread machine for Christmas. I had these wide eyed fantasies of making delicious wonderful bread and buns for us all so we could sit down for various delightful baked treats to break up homeschool/WFH hell.

So far I've done three attempts using bread/dough mode... and they've all gone pear shaped. It's starting to feel personal and my Nigella fantasies have crumbled to dust!

I've measured stuff out using their special cup and spoons. I've made sure the liquids are lukewarm. I've followed the rules of adding the liquid first, then dry ingredients on the top, then yeast on the top of that.

Each time I've done it the liquid has not mixed with the yeast/top of the flour AT ALL. The book is adamant liquid must go in first, yeast must not touch it, I shouldn't mix before starting the programme but it's just not doing anything. Will the world end if I chuck everything in and give it a stir with a spatula before I start?

Also, does anyone have any epic recipes they'd like to share please (assuming I can get this working at all!)?

I don't have it but suggest you add a bit more water.

Mine is a Panasonic but I always start with the dry ingredients first (incl yeast), pour in the liquid and 49 times out of 50 the loaf is fine. 👀

friskybivalves · 04/02/2021 23:06

So I do:

1 tsp salt
1 tsp dried yeast
1 tbl sugar
250g strong white bread flour
250g strong brown bread flour
350ml tepid water

Dry ingredients on the bottom then flour then water.

Mine has a trapdoor to chuck in some raisins or seeds halfway through. Does it automatically. But that's all I do. Choose medium loaf setting generally and medium crust. Delicious.

Are you sure the paddle/mixer bit is going round properly? Have you run the programme without anything in the loaf tin just to check? Mine once wasn’t rotating properly, it had become stiff for some reason, I gave it a good scrub and put some vegetable oil on it and it was fine again.

StrugglingICUnurse · 04/02/2021 23:13

Is the stirrer working? As long as it's not on a time delay, I would stir once at the beginning, as you suggested.

I've got the same brand but a different model (mine's quite old now) and the only time I've ever had it where the wet and dry ingredients haven't mixed is when I hadn't pushed the mixer paddle down properly in the middle when I out it back after washing. The stick was spinning but the blade bit wasn't going anywhere. Might be worth putting it on empty and just double checking that everything is doing what it ought to be! I always put the wet ingredients in first as per the book and 99.9% of my loaves have come out perfectly.

Chasingsquirrels · 04/02/2021 23:18

It does sound like the paddle isn't turning properly.
I think I've got the same machine and never have any problems with it mixing (although dp put it on the other week not realising you should put the ingredients in the pan in the same order as the recipe and put the flour in first and water in top and that didn't mix well at all).
2nd turning it on empty and watching to see if the paddle is turning.

Ha! I take too long to type. Massive x-post Grin

Hello,

the most important is that the salt doesn’t touch the yeast in the beginning or don’t put it together. It won’t grow.
make sure that the water is warm ambient, not very hot or will kill the yeast which is bacteria.

I always mix it in a bowl (add the yeast at the very end when all has been mixed and obviously mix it with hands or with a mixer machine) and leave the mix in the bread maker with the time programming during the night (when is bread. So it has time to ferment and grow.
If you use only wholemeal flour (I do), add another 100ml of water.

this is mine my result
see pics 100% wholemeal

@Belénp that's spectacular. Op I
do I fact have this breadmaker. The key thing is to follow the instructions manual exactly on the order of ingredients. And salt one side, yeast the other. Also I agree that you need more water if wholemeal but the recipes should say so.

marylou25 · 16/01/2024 10:01

Join the FB machine bread making page! I bought a second hand one last year and have finally mastered it, couple of disasters but if the manual says liquids first then I would do it that way. I would also find a recipe that uses grams rather than the cups, much more accurate. As well as that you really must check the dough after it starts mixing, sometimes it needs a tiny bit extra flour or water, I also use a soft spatula to ensure the corner bits of flour get mixed in by nudging them out of corners and into the mix. The ball of dough should be an obvious ball, tacky but not sticky and leaving the walls of the tin bit cleanly enough on each twist/knead. Once you're happy with the appearance of the ball of dough then don't open the machine again until it's baked unless you are removing the paddle before baking or baking the dough in the oven, once the final rise is done definitely don't open it to peek in when it starts baking as it can fall at that stage.

Thanks marmaladeandpeanutbutter,

It should be a full wholemeal receipt, because the one that is in the book is with white flour and wholemeal….

Hello BrowncoatWaffles,
I watched a video about faulty bread and some people reported it. Sometimes the blade is not sitting correctly in the place and won’t turn. It needs to be pushed down.
or could be a faulty machine if new.
When the machine is old it could be that the belt is not working and the blade doesn’t work….
