lack of appetite when teething?

You've probably seen my millions of threads about my ds and his teething problems! He's really not himself at the moment, first tooth came through a month ago, and the one next to it has been at the srface for 2 weeks now. The weekend was terrible, he was extremely flushed and upset, no appetite for milk or food. Last few days he hasn't been flushed at all, but his appetite is still poor. Whats the best thing to do when they won't eat? Is it best to offer them a couple of choices, or if he won't eat much at meal times , offer extra milk instead?? He won't eat hardly anything at teatime, not even bits of yoghurt or fruit. And then he'll only have a few oz's of his bedtime milk. Wakes at 6ish and seems hungry for his milk then, but thats the only time he seems hungry!! Any advice welcome

Sounds just like my DD (21 months). She is exactly the same when teething but I just got used to the fact that she won't starve herself so please don't worry. He will eat when he needs to if that is 6am then so be it for now. Just try and make sure he gets plenty of fluids whilst his appetitie is low and maybe try to stick to smooth food for now.

thanks helsi, he is not keen on lumps at all at the moment in his food. keep persevering with finger foods, but any bits he bites off things, he just spits out!!

alibo, my dd (2 now) is a rubbish eater at the best of times but whenever anything happens to upset things like teeth or colds etc. she just stops eating altogether and also cuts back on milk. It used to freak me out but now I've kind of got used to it. She's got a cold now and hasn't eaten a single bit of food in 2 days and only drunk half her usual amount of milk and a bit of juice. Sigh ...

Cutting teeth can really affect their digestive system that's why a lot of kids get those horrible acidic poos when they're teething, the food just races through their systems due to extra saliva swallowed and I guess that just puts them off eating.

He will do if his gums are sore but at least biting them may help his gums even if he doesn't eat it. I have also started DD on vitamins (just one 5ml spoonful during the day) for periods when she is going throught this. Your DS does sound just like DD so I understand how frustrating it is. Like I said he won't starve himself he will eat. DD tends to stick to cold yoghurt, pureed fruit and custard (sugar free), jelly, soup with bread "pobs" when she is teeting.

Yes Prefernot, DD has terrible poos too when teething. Her bottom gets soooo sore she screams the place down.

As I have posted here before, my DD survived on 2 fromage frais a day for months when she was teething. Also freaked me out, but she just wasn't interested in food. And there is no way you can make a baby eat if they don't want to...

Would keep offering fluids and let him set the pace. IME they make up for it when things settle down!

thanks for the reassurance folks, he seems to be picking up a bit now, gp thinks he's had a bit of a virus as well, due to a rash appearing on his body. he has been teething for 2 months now, and the second on is still taking its time coming proprerly through. i do worry that he isn't eating enough variety for 9 month old, but trying new things in these last few weeks has been virtually impossible with his appetite being poor.
