How to reheat mashed potato?

jinglejangle6 · 26/01/2021 20:20

I’m new to cooking (so please don’t laugh) and am also a new mum, with a 9 month old DS. I’m cooking lots of homemade meals for him but today, I felt the fish dish he had could have done with a bit of extra carbs - mashed potato would have been perfect!

Ideally I’d like to cook a couple of portions in one go and keep them in the freezer, then reheat as needed. Problem is, I don’t have a microwave! What is the best way to do this?

TIA!

You can reheat mashed potato on the hob, in a saucepan. I have frozen mashed potato pellets from Morrisons and it says you can do them in the oven too.

As pp says you could definitely use the job but honestly investing in a microwave is worth it when you have young kids. So easy to whip meals out the freezer and straight into the microwave. We used to batch cook various veg and purée the. freeze in ice cube trays. I would then have ready portions of veg to make up a meal (for instance, a cube of carrot, mashed butternut squash, mashed broccoli etc then for pudding some rice pudding with a couple of cubes of purée pear or apple).

It's great to have it on hand when you need it

Thanks! Do I add any water when reheating or literally just put it in a pan and wait until it’s piping hot?

Would love a microwave but we’ve no space sadly Sad

Ideally you want minimum effort....
So using mash as topping on your fish pie is easiest - don’t need to watch hob, less washing up.
You just put mash on top of fish mix - could get large ramekins for individual pie portions, and shove in oven. Cover with foil if needed.
I make numerous batches of shepherds pie mix - so the lamb mince with carrots, celery, onions and peas - peas added at end. Then freeze in portion containers - so maybe one small child, or two large adult etc, then do big batch of mash, and freeze in same way. Either get lots of Tupperware containers or use freezer bags - you can even tie your pie filling bag (fish mix, shepherds etc) to mash bag. Then when needed, take out, defrost, put in dish, into oven - very easy....
I do the same with pasta dishes - cook mince, cook pasta - freeze in portion sizes - defrost, put in pie dish, add a bit of ketchup if dry, then put grated cheese on top and shove in oven!

Can you keep a small microwave in another room?

Find space for a small cheap microwave. I wouldn’t be without mine. I don’t ‘cook’ with it often at all but it is invaluable for heating things through...that coffee that went cold, soup for lunch, milk for a hot chocolate, reheating leftovers...as well as taking a minute and a half to make fresh porridge for breakfast.
They’re cheap and oh so cheerful.

I just put a bit of foil over the top of mine when re heating in the oven to stop it drying out.
