Dairy free gluten free

I want to try this for a week to see if it helps my insane bloating.

What easy family meals are unknowingly already ticking this box without a tonne of extra effort or special ingredients?? I think I'll get some GF pasta so that's some stuff easily fixed.

So far I've only got

Shepherds pie
Fajitas mix with rice not fajitas
Jackets with beans
Chicken curry with coconut milk and rice
Tomato/ Spanish chicken with rice or pots
Chicken in bacon with potatoes and veg (will be very dry though might need a tomatoey sauce)
Roast chicken with normal sides - what about gravy???

Bisto best gravy is gluten free and dairy free
GF sausages (Heck, Black Farmer, Jolly Hog and quite a lot of supermarket own brand are GF), mash (made with df spread) and veg
Old El Paso GF fajita kit
Fried rice (GF soy sauce - usually labelled tamari, no one would know the difference)
Stir fry with rice noodles and gf soy sauce
Jacket with tuna mayo

So I think my shopping list is (and I really want to keep this small in case I don't stick with it!)

Gluten free pasta
Almond milk
Dairy free spread
GF sausages great idea
Bistro gravy (useful to have anyway)

lookup the FODMAP diet if you are going to do this
You can use lactofree milk that way
BUT many other things will need to be avoided (long list!) beans do bloat!
However unless there is any reason why you can't use peppermint - I strongly suggest mint tea (no milk naturally) I don't particularly like the flavour but it does help.

My gf friend enjoys the heck chicken burgers.

CMOTDibbler · 25/01/2021 21:55

You need to give it at least 2 weeks to see if it makes a difference

Don't forget stock cubes often have gluten in. Knorr are GF, and a number of others also, but they are clearly labelled

For breakfast, you might be best getting a bag of GF oats so you can make porridge with the almond milk.

FusionChefGeoff · 25/01/2021 21:55

@mumwon I'm planning to do gluten and dairy first then if that doesn't help, the FODMAP is next!

I have been gluten and dairy free for years. Spag Bol made with gluten free pasta is a good one. I also cook alot of meat/fish and 2 (or 3 or 4) veg. An easy oven dinner is lemon parsley fish parcels with rice and veg. Frozen cod or other white fish with chopped fresh parsley, tiny bit of crushed garlic, salt and pepper mixed with a small amount of olive oil. Wrap them up and bang them in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes. I usually do fish fingers for DS at the same time. You could also do potato wedges or baked sweet potato. Get the pure Df butter type spread, it is quite nice.

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 25/01/2021 22:09

Forgot to say add a bit of lemon zest and Tbsp of lemon on that recipe 🤦🏻‍♀️

OwlWearingGlasses · 25/01/2021 22:11

Tesco own brand gluten free gravy is a lot cheaper and just as nice as Bisto. It come in beef, chicken and vegetable flavours.

Bimblesalong · 25/01/2021 22:18

Mindful chef do dairy and gluten free meal boxes. They have a brilliant free recipe resource online if you google them.

EwwSprouts · 25/01/2021 22:23

Sweet potato mash is wetter than normal mash so no need to add milk/butter just black pepper.
Stir fry - you can get gluten free soy sauce
Little pot of GF harissa sauce make a much tastier casserole.

FusionChefGeoff · 25/01/2021 22:24

Oh a meal box is a great idea to make this easier / more interesting!

You'll find these days many products are gf naturally. You can buy naturally gf sausages cheaper than the gf section ones.
We have a lot of shepherd's pie, bolognaise, chilli, casserole, stews, Yorkshire pudding filled with sausage and veg, tomato and chicken pasta, curry's (avoid creamy ones), all day breakfast.
Make sure your stock is gluten free.

Hope it works for you and helps with the bloating. I would agree it will take a bit longer than a week. I have been g/f for almost 15 years. And if I eat it by mistake it can take at least 2 weeks to work through the system. And for the other effects - fatigue, foggy-brain,
to go.
Also if you do go back to eating wheat. Take it easy. Eating a whole meal bread sandwich looked like a tasty treat after a g/f break ( I did a carb free Atkins keto thing 20 years ago) but it certainly wasn’t afterwards. It was a bit too heavy for my digestive system to handle!

Thanks so much everyone you've really helped give me confidence and I'm willing to try it for longer if that's the best route.

Was also buoyed up by a trip to my local health food place as they had loads of alternatives which I'd been thinking I'd have to give up completely. I've invested in suitable stocks, soy sauce (who knew!), bread flour (worth a try), vegan block 'butter', some 'cheese' and GF pasta. Got almond milk and GF fish fingers coming with my Aldi click and collect.

Also done a meal plan for 10 days and cooked up some generic soup and bags of veggie rice for the freezer. I am ready!!

Had the butter and cheese on a jacket with a bean and tomato casserole thingy and was pleasantly surprised!

The best thing the shop provided though was an Alpro soy chocolate pudding - absolutely lovely!!
