Dairy and Soya Alternatives

Hi guys,

Just looking for some help, my little one is almost thirteen months and he's having less and less milk. He's currently on nutramigen 2 as he has a cows milk allergy.

We've tried Soya products but after speaking to a pediatrician the proteins are very similar so he's still unable to process it.

I'm looking for snacks and yogurts that are free from cows milk and Soya but just can't seem to find any. I've found the odd one here or there but it seems like they aren't consistently stocked.

Has anyone gone through anything similar or have any suggestions.

Thank you Smile

My DD likes these. I get them in Asda. The pouch type yoghurts I've also seen in tesco and sainsbury's but the koko ones are new to us and I've not been to tesco and sainsbury's for a while but they may well be there.
The pouch ones are smooth, the koko ones have small bits of fruit in which my DD normally hates, but she likes these.
Good luck.

This app is useful. You can add in the allergies/ intolerances and look for food in different shops.
You do still need to double check the packets, but it's generally quite reliable.
There are facebook groups too for dairy and soya allergies which are useful.

We are using Koko yoghurts and milk. Too. Get them consistently in Morrisons. Dd is ok with them, although her going dairy free seems to have reduced the amount of sweet stuff we eat as a family - puddings etc

I'm DF and really should be SF but do end up eating some.

We end up cooking a lot from scratch as it's so much easier.

For snacks you could try some of these:

Hummus & veg sticks

Apple slices press with smooth nut butter.

Violife cheese spread on toast fingers with halved grapes or halved cherry tomatoes.

Homemade banana bread. We make our with Pure or Vitalite.

Blueberry pancakes made with an alternative milk like Almond. You can make them and freeze in ones or twos.

Homemade ice lolly with a milk LO can tolerate and some fruit.

Thank you guys, wasn't expecting responses so soon.

Will go looking for the koko yogurts today, I tried the pouches but he didn't like the consistency.

@JiltedJohnsJulie thanks for the snack ideas I'll definitely be trying the pancakes and Hummas.

You can get plain coconut "yoghurt". Coconut Collective. Oatly is starting to do more variety too - think I saw a yoghurt. DS(2) seems to like it, he's just about ok with some dairy but gets loose/uncomfortable on too much.

Lidl has some vegan "yoghurts" too which don't contain soya. Would probably want to split portions though.

The ?kiddylicious? fruit bars in the kids' snacks aisle are mostly fine as are the flapjacky ones. I'd say more are ok than not but obviously check packets.

We buy Nush almond milk yoghurts which are expensive but DS and I like them. Oatly do yoghurt, too. Neither of us liked any of the coconut-based yoghurts we tried.

What kind of snacks do you want? I've never had much of an issue with snacks, apart from cheese obviously, there's always been plenty DS can have.

We buy from Ocado and Tesco, which tend to have a good range of "free from" products.

Veg sticks, fruit, rice cakes, oat cakes, Pom bears (I think they contain soya leicithin but many children can tolerate that), Ella's Kitchen oaty bars, homemade dairy-free savoury pancakes and muffins.

zzzebra · 26/01/2021 07:45

Our dietician advised to use Koko cheese and yoghurts has they have the most calcium added to them.

NameChange30 · 26/01/2021 07:46

Actually Pom bears don't contain soya leicithin (I just checked the packet)

It's hard to find bread without Soya but Aldi and Lidl both do brown bread that hasn't any soya in it.
Soya allergy and dairy allergy often go hand in hand, watch out for cheap eggs too as the hens are sometimes fed on soya so that can then affect the baby.
