Mulled wine with beef?

I've got some braising steak which I was going to cook slowly with red wine.
Only wine I have is mulled stuff leftover from Christmas. Yes or no?

I'm not sure about mulled.... I don't think I would

AdaColeman · 14/01/2021 17:52

Have a taste of it, if the wine is noticeably sweet I wouldn't use it, but if it's only spicy then I would use it.

I’ve used mulled wine for red cabbage and that was lovely. Maybe steak would work too.

Do you mean an unopened, commercial bottle?
If so, it would almost certainly be very sweet.

Cooking onions as a base would also create a lot of sugar, so a "no" from me.

do it....I did! Very delicious!

And it was leftover leftovers cos I slow roasted a shoulder of lamb with the first lot ...also very tasty!

Ermmm it's the only wine in the house, if I tasted , it would be gone! 6 inches of snow outside and so I'm not going shopping

Commercial and opened. I have leftover blue stilton which I could add to the accompanying mash to combat sweetness?

I've done it for the same reason, and I was also doubtful.

I was even more doubtful when it smelt very cinnamon-y.

The end result was absolutely fine though, i don't think I'd have known it was mulled wine in the final product.

Beef in mulled wine is delicious - just make it like you would beef bourguignon but obvs with the mulled wine instead of red.

PMcGintysGoat · 14/01/2021 19:37

The cinnamon smell was as it went into the oven, I should add - by the end it didn't smell of cinnamon!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 14/01/2021 21:17

i hope you enjoy it! I am feeling antsy now!

I'd do it again :D

That's your answer then! Wink Wine
