Cow's milk can be added to cooking, cereals and so on from 6 months, but not given as a drink until 12 months.

mears · 26/10/2004 10:42

When starting weaning use EBM to mix things. Skip babyrice completely when starting weaning at 6 months. Cow's milk can be used in cooking but i waited until babe had got used to some solid food first.

Twiglett · 26/10/2004 10:44

if I skip baby rice (she's had it for a couple of days) what do I start with?

she seemed to get a rash reaction to carrot which is the only other thing we've tried so far, so I was going to try that again in a couple of weeks

My daughter started with mashed banana, carrot, butternut squash, cooked apple and pear

WigWamBam · 26/10/2004 10:50

Not altogether, I hasten to add ...

mears · 26/10/2004 10:50

I used carrot, then carrot and potato. Then very quickly just went onto home made pureed food or jars (apologies but they are easy)

jane313 · 26/10/2004 10:52

How soon did you introduce meat and cheese when you started weaning at 6 months?

Twiglett · 26/10/2004 10:59

don't apologise mears .. I'm a big beleiver in the jars ... in fact I used to tip a jar's contents into plastic boxes when I took DS to childminder , just so I'd look like I cooked it myself

did you try a different food on each day?

Well I am going to own up to probably not doing this bit properly. I did not give little bits of different foods to be able to observe any reaction. I assumed (rightly or wrongly) that at 6 months DD's digestive system could cope with anything (didn't give nuts or egg till later though). She went from being exclusively breastfed till 6 months to 3 meals a day in less than a months. Started solids at teatime, then breakfast then lunch. Had savoury and pudding at lunch and teatime. If we had something that could be pureed easily she had that (minus salt). If not I would use a jar. She quickly increased amounts to 1/2jar savoury, 1/2 jar sweet. Once on 3 meals a day, I started to decrease breastfeeds at mealtime and gave juice (apologies again). I always let her breastfeed inbetween feeds when she wanted.

I never worried about when to give meat etc. - I just gave her what I fancied putting together. Not very scientific eh?

XenaWP · 26/10/2004 11:24

I think you're supposed to do it gradually.. every 3 - 7days (depends how impatient you are!) so you can see if there's a reaction
PS thanks for all the help with the games, have now nearly finished MOTAS yay!

hercules · 26/10/2004 11:24

I did what Mears did. I used jars as well as my own food. I never bothered with the one at a time. Gave carrots, sweet pot, brocolli, bananas, pears etc.

I did use cow milks in food.

hercules · 26/10/2004 11:24

or exptresed straight into the food dish by hand.

jane313 · 26/10/2004 11:25

Its seems much simpler! Its just my son only slept through regularly after he ate protein so if I did it again I would want to do that asap. Although I might get one of those ones that sleep through the night at 5 weeks. (I only met these mothers in the first few months, I hated them)

How fast you go depends on how worried you are about food intolerances and allergies ... for the vast majority of people it's going to be no problem at all and you can just shovel the food in! If you're got a family history of allergies or atopic tendencies then you probably are best off taking the cautious approach - one new food every three days, waiting to make sure there's no reaction. But again, it's so unlikely there's going to be a problem with basic fruit and veg.

I was pretty careful (given my allergic state!!) but was most cautious with the big candidates for food intolerance: wheat, dairy, eggs etc. And still haven't given dd nuts (I'm allergic to some).

And though mears is right - you don't need to do baby rice - my dd rather liked the stuff and so I found it quite a nice introduction and mixed with EBM I thought at least she was getting more milk this way!
