What the hell would I use! I have a new cook book, and am on a learning curve.
Can I get it in Lidl/ Tesco?

Depends what it is for. Are you looking for a coconut based alternative to milk? Or a dairy free alternative to coconut milk?

Stealthynamechange · 10/01/2021 14:19

Depends what you are making you could use soya milk or cream or yoghurt ... whats the recipe for?

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 10/01/2021 14:20

All coconut milk is dairy free, unless made into ice cream or something. Tesco definitely has it, along with half a dozen or so different nut/oat/rice based 'milks'. I don't have a lidl locally so dunno.

Bytheriogrande · 10/01/2021 14:21

Coconut milk is dairy free. Or have I misunderstood the question?

dementedpixie · 10/01/2021 14:22

Coconut milk is dairy free

Bytheriogrande · 10/01/2021 14:24

You'll be able to get coconut milk at almost every supermarket. It's usually tinned.

dementedpixie · 10/01/2021 14:28

We bought some in aldi yesterday

NannyR · 10/01/2021 14:34

You can get coconut milk in tins for cooking things like curry and cartons of coconut milk drink (fresh and uht) as an alternative to dairy milk for drinking and cereal, alpro or koko are two brands to look for. Or, are you looking for a dairy free alternative to coconut milk?

I think it’s mainly alternative to coconut milk to reduce the calories gif a creamy dhal recipe. Trust DH to pick the one recipe from the new cookbook I don’t understand, sigh

You get reduced fat coconut milk too

NannyR · 10/01/2021 14:42

I just put half the recommended amount of coconut milk in my dhal, it's too creamy with the full amount, and I just make up the rest with stock or water.

cariadlet · 10/01/2021 14:53

Agree with pp to buy reduced fat coconut milk or to use normal coconut milk and top up with water. Coconut milk really is the best for dahls and curries. Other plant milks would give a different flavour.

Stealthynamechange · 10/01/2021 16:03

Agree with pp. It's the tinned coconut milk you want for cooking, don't buy the uht stuff. Lidl sell tins reduced fat coconut milk. Enjoy it!

MegCleary · 10/01/2021 16:26

Will go get low fat coconut milk

I use Maggi coconut powder. It keeps for ages in its packet in the cupboard, & I can use small amounts rather than having to use a whole tin of liquid.
