Online tea- have to boast

I love proper leaf tea and over the years I have bought Darjeeling at Harrods, for my “ I’ve got home form work/ switched off my monitor” cup of tea. I justify it on the basis that a cup works out at less than I’d pay for a Starbucks or other high street coffee. But lately I’ve got fed up with ever increasing prices and indifferent service. So I googled Darjeeling and oh my goodness, there’s so much choice now ( I tried this a few years ago and there was virtually nothing). I recommend a lovely business called Commins tea ( i have no link to them whatsoever) . Apparently they have a tea room in Bath as well. Their Darjeeling is beautiful and good value. The delivery was really quick too. I ain’t going back to Harrods now.

I love darjeeling! I currently buy mine from postcard teas, their family first flush darjeeling is a good one for regular drinking

I bought their best teas of 2020 sample box recently. The keemun needles, which I had never tried before, is so good; very fragrant, delicious and a complex flavour. The tasting notes said an aroma like Turkish delight and I can really smell/taste it.

Orange Pekoe for me, my dd has tummy problems and can only drink green/white/herbal. Found a really good place chandlers its at Fishguard in Wales. Usually get a few to see us through.

@Skinandbones I was at Fishguard this summer, ate fish and chips by the harbour, happy days! @happysunr1se good to hear about other tea businesses

The Comins website shop is nice, @whataboutbob! Its lovely to see people with a passion doing high end things well. I love the ceramics!

I feel like in this country we really undervalue quality and things made by hand.
Have you ever been to Japan? They have so many traditional crafts that are properly nurtured. I bought a cherry bark covered tea caddy from there. It is just gorgeous!

I'm sure other countries have similar appreciation of quality handmade items, but I have travelled that much.

My inlaws are Hong Kong Chinese, their origin is dirt poor (mil and fil were farmhands), hence why they came to UK in 70's, but they really value beautiful wellcrafted items and also food items including tea. It must be something intrinsic in their culture.

I’ve never been to Japan, but only hear good things about it from those who have been. Maybe one day... Maybe it’s a trend at the moment, spending less but more mindfully?

If so, it is a good trend I think!

I've never bought tea from Harrods, do they give free samples with your order? Bit rubbish for a delivery charge but I guess the prestigious brand means people will pay where other companys give free delivery.

I got given a caddy of English Breakfast loose leaf from the Wolsey (restaurant) which is pretty decent.

I started off buying supermarket brand loose leaf darjeeling, m and s, sainsburys, waitrose, but they were not that great. You know that fragrant almost floral sort of lingering aftertaste you get with good tea?...none of them had it.

whataboutbob · 10/01/2021 15:56

My experience of Harrods is they give nothing for free! I live in London so I go there ( well used to) and don’t tend to order online. I agree about the supermarket leaf tea not being up to standard and I never get that herbal/ floral/ muscatel flavour I look for in Darjeeling. I do buy Waitrose’s leaf Assam though which makes a decent breakfast pot.
