Almost always do! At Christmas they are peeled about 5pm the day before. Never put them in the fridge - why would you? They are root vegetables.
Just drain and replace with fresh water before boiling.

bellinisurge · 03/01/2021 15:45

Always do. Sit in salted water. Drain. Boil in newly drawn water.

redcandlelight · 03/01/2021 15:47

fine if covered in salted water.
potatos should never go in the fridge.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 03/01/2021 15:49

Yes, I often do it too. They won't come to any harm.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 03/01/2021 15:50

Ok thanks , yes all covered in water and he said he was going to drain and refill before cooking
No room in fridge as he Also prepped up chicken pie filling that looks like its for whole street !!
But be nice not to have to cook today though ,

What would the harm possibly be? I often do this and it's something my family always have done before a roast.

What do you think they do down the chippy? Peel them as they need them?

Ninkanink · 03/01/2021 15:51

It’s absolutely fine as they’ve been in water.

insancerre · 03/01/2021 15:53

I use to have to do this every day for my mum when I was a teenager
I would get home from school and have to peel the spuds ready for when she got home from work. We had chips, mash or just boiled every day
Never put them in the fridge

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 03/01/2021 15:55

@doyoumind no idea just wondered why online it said to put in fridge if for a few hours so thought must be a reason
Kitchen quite cool anyway as he had door open to help cool down pie filling before putting in fridge

At Christmas peel day before, leave em in water overnight - absolutely fine.

EngineeringFix · 03/01/2021 16:12

It's one of those things we did a lot in a big family. Also at Christmas.

The online thing might be for US audience who live in hot zones!

Georgyporky · 03/01/2021 17:57

One of the few useful things I was taught in D.S. lessons was that potatoes lose nutrients if left in water too long.

The only soaking I do is for chips, to get rid of some of the starch.

EngineeringFix · 03/01/2021 18:00

Yes, don't do it if you want to maximize vitamin C.

I had a thing about this when the kids were tiny and eating miniscule portions!

Ninkanink · 03/01/2021 18:22

I never pre-prepare veg because I just don’t see the point - it’s not that much faff to do it as needed. But it’s really nothing to worry about, especially if it’s only done here or there (so that you’re not routinely losing nutrients).

Doyoumind · 03/01/2021 22:39

Once you've peeled potatoes, there's no real risk with losing vitamins as they've already gone. No, you shouldn't pre-prepare veg like carrots if you want to protect the vitamin content but it's going to make very little difference to a peeled potato.

EngineeringFix · 03/01/2021 22:47

Potatoes have loads of vitamin C and potassium and not just in the skin!
