I've eaten rotten eggs haven't I?

I cooked some eggs last night and noticed a vague gas smell in the kitchen and checked the date, 15th January. I don't have a proper sense of smell (not covid!) . Now I've felt sick all night, got stomach cramps and lower back ache.

They were off weren't they ? How sick is this going to make me?

15th Jan? They should be fine then. Did you mean 15th Dec?

princessjasmineofagrabah · 03/01/2021 16:11

Food poisoning doesn't usually kick in so fast, or give you back ache

bartymao · 03/01/2021 16:23

It said 15th Jan but they could have been other eggs in that box. It was like the backache you get when you've got an upset stomach but maybe it's coincidence though I've been being sick on and off all day.

It won't be the eggs

PleasantVille · 03/01/2021 16:27

I'd say it's extremely unlikely that eggs still 2 weeks in date would be off.

What do you mean by other eggs in the box? Do you think the shop have mislabeled them?

I can't see how anyone can tell you why you feel ill

ShrikeAttack · 03/01/2021 16:27

Rotten eggs give off more than 'a faint gas smell'.

The last time I cracked one open we all ran out the house screaming!

CorianderBee · 03/01/2021 16:52

You would 100% know the second you cracked the eggs. Only time I've had a written egg is was like sulphur crossed with death and I nearly threw up multiple times chucking it out.

You'd know. Plus I've eaten eggs a month or so out of date and they're fine. It's very obviously if they're off.

CorianderBee · 03/01/2021 16:52

Rotten not written

plixy · 03/01/2021 16:59

I cooked one last week and nearly threw up when I cracked it open the smell was vile. I put it in the bin then had to take the bin outside as it was that strong. I really think you would notice if it was off.

Even without a sense of smell? I can barely smell anything.

We get eggs from the milkman and a recent box was wet as rain had got into the box he puts things in so I took the eggs out and put them in a different box.

It's not the eggs - you'd know. They say 15th, they're fine. Have you been sick?

H1978 · 05/01/2021 21:17

I had duck eggs once that made me really ill. Labour type stomach pain all night followed by sickness through most of the next day. This resulted in me getting horrendous acid reflux. That was 8 years ago and since then I can’t have any caffeinated drinks or eat heavy food on a night or I get really bad acid reflux.

BettySundaes · 05/01/2021 21:26

Eggs don't have to be rotten to give you salmonella which comes on very quickly - 6 hours is certainly possible. Your system needs to rid itself of it - so it's out one way or another or both.

It's a rough ride but the sooner that happens the sooner you'll start recovering.

hadesinahalfahell · 05/01/2021 21:28

I eat eggs which are past their use by date all the time

PainterInPeril · 05/01/2021 21:39

Were they hard boiled, OP? And how many did you eat?

bartymao · 05/01/2021 22:12

1 lightly fried, I always have them lightly fried so the white is solid but the yolk is still runny.

I've never looked at a sell by date on an egg in my life. I'm in my 50s and as far as I know, I've never been ill from an egg. I'm sure you'll be fine.
