Large tomato - just how big is that?

I found a nice recipe for tomato soup but the ingredients are listed by size and ‘a handful of’.

So it has ‘large tomatoes’ - I’m not sure if that’s just an ordinary large one (tangerine sized) or the massive ones you get that are the size of a big apple? It’s a US recipe if that helps.

Any ideas how large ‘large’ is?

I would assume the "beefsteak" style tomatoes which are the size of a clenched fist.

Big monster ones then? Will they be as tasty - I always assumed that smaller, redder ones tasted nicer.

Well it’s in the pot now- the ‘half a piece of ginger’ got me - how long is a piece of string? I buy the lumps that are the size of my hand!

With soup, pretty much any quantity will work ok so I would just go with your gut instinct. You can always taste a bit and add more of something if the balance feels wrong.

American recipes tend to specify ginger in terms of 1-inch lengths of raw root, so half a piece would be a half-inch length. How gingery that makes your soup will depend on the girth of your ginger root of course!

Very gingery! Also rather nice. I didn’t even need to add much water as it was quite thin.
