Bubble & Squeak

Every recipe I see online for Bubble & Squeak uses mashed potatoes. But I don't think it's traditional to have mash with Christmas dinner in the UK, so do people make mash just to make Bubble with their leftovers? But surely some of the leftovers are your roast potatoes?

I'm not from the UK and my English DH's family always just chop the leftovers up, stick under the grill, and call it b&s. But I'm intrigued to make a "proper" one.

I never cook mash for Christmas dinner, the only potatoes in my and squeak are roasties. I mash the carrots a bit and if we have mashed swede will add that too but mine has always been fine without actual mash.

I use diced roasties, I make extra and hide them.

Yes, roughly mash the potatoes (and any other veg) as per this recipe recipes.sainsburys.co.uk/recipes/sides/leftover-roast-bubble-and-squeak

We cook boiled and roast potatoes with Christmas dinner. Everyone eats mainly roasties and then we use the boiled potatoes in the bubble and squeak.

Thanks! Mashing up the leftover roasties makes sense! Was just confused by all the recipes telling you to make mashed potatoes just to make b&s...surely that defeats the purpose of an easy, use up leftovers meal

Jamie Oliver posted a recipe for bubble and squeak which looked really interesting.

I always make mash with Christmas Dinner (as well as Roasties) because I prefer it but also to make sure there's some for the bubble and squeak

HardAsSnails · 28/12/2020 16:45

My bubble and squeak is roughly chopped up and fried: roast potatoes, carrots (or carrot and swede mash if we had that), green veg, Yorkshire puddings and stuffing.

Yes, just roughly mash whatever leftover potato, root veg, green leafy veg you have. It's lovely with carrots, parsnips, squash, cabbage, sprouts, even peas in, if you have some left over. I bet leftover chestnuts might be good, too. So much more interesting than just mashed potato & cabbage. And don't skimp on the butter, salt & pepper.

I always try to get DH & DD to eat B&S, but they never want to eat it. (Weirdos). Lots for me! Grin

In all my years, I've never come across a leftover roast potato. Best part of Christmas dinner!
