Stupidly left thawing too late! How can I speed up the process ( without using the microwave)?

Take them out of your fridge! Grin

Ftumch · 23/12/2020 18:11

Just leave them in the kitchen overnight, as long as you haven't got the heating on high they'll be fine.

Palavah · 23/12/2020 18:11

Are you in the UK or similar climate? Can you stick them outside somewhere secure from foxes etc?

happytoday73 · 23/12/2020 18:11

Take them out of fridge...

Su52 · 23/12/2020 18:16

Is it safe to do this? Everything I read says you can’t leave food out?? Yes, I’m in the UK! The Turkey had been in the fridge for about 48 hours, is it still ok to leave it out?

Yes, perfectly safe! Just turn the radiator s off in the room if you're worried.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 23/12/2020 18:22

Take it out of the fridge. The cold temp on the still frozen inside of the meat will keep the thawed out outer meat cold enough to still be perfectly safe.

If you haven’t got a meat thermometer get one, or at least promise you’ll get one before you have to do the whole thing over again next year - it takes all the guesswork out of it, you can just test when cooking time is reached and if it’s the right temperature it’s done and safe. If not pop it back in and test again in 10-15 min. That’s all there is to it.

If it’s still a little frozen tomorrow you can still go ahead and cook it, it will just need to cook for longer.

Palavah · 23/12/2020 18:26

If the turkey has already been thawing for 48 hours are you sure it's still frozen?

Beconase20 · 23/12/2020 18:31

Totally agree...leave it to thaw out overnight! I always do this with meat and we have never had food poisoning!

minipie · 23/12/2020 18:32

I always thaw meat out of the fridge and nobody’s been sick yet.

I do put it in the fridge asap once it’s thawed.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 23/12/2020 18:33

@Palavah it could easily take 72 hours to thaw out entirely depending on size.

Arrives tomorrow if you order it now. They're meant to be amazing

Lock it in the car boot.

Figgyboa · 23/12/2020 19:41

Place the meat in the sink and run cold water over it. (off course in its packaging).

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 23/12/2020 19:42

Another vote for take it out-I always thaw meat out of the refrigerator-I usually put it in one side of the sink in case it is leaky.

Keep an eye on it though and pop it back in fridge once thawed.

Brot64 · 23/12/2020 19:52

Out of the fridge and put them in cold water (normal tap water). It will only be a few hours before they defrost.

Su52 · 24/12/2020 11:02

Thanks everyone! They’re all still a bit frozen-dont know why! I’m ok to cook meat (beef/gammon) if it’s partially thawed?? I’ll try to cook the Turkey later on. If it’s still the same, can I cook it partially thawed?? Sorry to be a pain!

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 24/12/2020 11:06

Yes you can cook it partially frozen but it will need to cook for quite a bit longer. Have you got a meat thermometer or can you manage get one today?

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 24/12/2020 11:08

Are you going to boil the gammon before you roast it? If so it’ll be absolutely fine anyway.

Put the beef and the turkey into some cold water now, that will help.

Su52 · 24/12/2020 11:25

Aah great Thankyou!

Skipsurvey · 24/12/2020 11:27

put them in the car

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 24/12/2020 11:28

Are you having anyone over? Do any of your guests have a meat thermometer? Or can you get one today? It’s quite important that you test if you’re going to cook it partially frozen, to ensure you’ve brought it up to a sufficiently high temp.

helloxhristmas · 24/12/2020 11:32

Take them out of the fridge. I couldn't defrost chicken breasts in my fridge never mind a whole turkey it would take a week.

Su52 · 26/12/2020 22:43

Thankyou all! Managed to cook everything. Some even half-thawed but seems to be all good!... Thankyou to you all for your patience! Xxx
