Foreleg of lamb

Ordered leg of lamb over the phone. I thought he said he only had a "full leg" so I said yeah why not, make it big. Turns out he said foreleg. Anyone had this? Is it a less decent cut since he said "only have" . How would you cook it?

THANKS

I've not heard of it but if it's not good enough for roasting then would it be better slow cooked for a long time? I'm thinking a stew or a curry of some sort.

Jackabobbo · 20/12/2020 14:19

If it's a tougher cut I mean. I tried googling it but mostly got recipes for roasted leg of lamb, nothing specifically about foreleg.

namechangefail2020 · 20/12/2020 14:24

Yeah it doesn't come up much does it. Strange really as it was actually 37 pound so not really cheap. But maybe to be safe I should slow cook as you say

Is it from the front leg of the lamb perhaps, so a smaller joint than the hind leg would give?

CrochetOrBust · 20/12/2020 14:27

If you’re collecting it from a butcher ask them how to cook it? There isn’t much info online but it looks like it’s smaller and less meaty / less gelatinous than the hind leg. I’d think you could probably cook it the same way though.

Surely the butcher means a 'lamb shank'??? That is a foreleg, but shank is the only term I've heard and you will find multiple recipes for that.

I slow cook them and serve 1 per person (if not giant). Either a red wine sauce or a minty one. Served with mash and fresh veg, it falls off the bone and is delicious.

Normally its a cheaper cut than a whole leg, so unless you bought 5kg of it, I cant believe they were £37!!!

MotherofTerriers · 20/12/2020 14:30

Isn't that going to be a lamb shoulder? In which case I'd slow roast.

namechangefail2020 · 20/12/2020 14:33

Yes was def 37, however it was a kosher butcher so that's usually a lot more expensive anyway but it's wayyyyy too big to be a shank, it's 2kg and they also had shanks so must be something different. I'll call the butcher as it's already been delivered. Thanks for the advice

Ok he just told me it's a shoulder roll. Maybe should say that on the packet haha

Shoulder is tougher and needs to be cooked much more slowly. It's nice but I'm very surprised it cost you that much, it's a fairly cheap cut of meat.

namechangefail2020 · 20/12/2020 14:41

I've def been ripped off but thanks definitely going to slow roast

I follow www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/lamb-recipes/incredible-roasted-shoulder-of-lamb-with-smashed-veg-and-greens/ these Jamie O instructions for slow roasting a lamb shoulder & it is delicious.

Chewbecca · 20/12/2020 19:19

Usually costs £20-£25 from my butchers btw.

Changi · 20/12/2020 19:24

I bought two today. £4.95 each.

namechangefail2020 · 20/12/2020 19:42

@Chewbecca yeah kosher butchers are a lot more expensive, chicken breast are like double than they are in Tesco but I had to get from there as my partner is Jewish. It's a bloody joke. Great tip for cooking tho! Thank you!
