What's your secret to healthy snacking?

Calling all snackers - and parents of snackers!

We're writing a Mumsnet guide to healthy snacking and would love to include some gems from wise Mumsnetters. We're after crafty ways to get more fruit and veg into the DC, and clever, portable snacks to eat in the car after school or on the go.

Please do pop your ideas in this thread - we look forward to reading them.

Thank you Flowers

A big plate with a ramekin dish of hummus in the middle, carrot sticks and sugar snap peas around the edge. Always arrange food on a plate, appears more interesting to the kids.

@friskybivalves

If you google weaning baby egg muffins you'll get loads of ideas but my very basic recipe would be as follows..

  • Basically though pre heat oven to fan 180
  • Grease a muffin/cupcake tin
  • Whisk eggs with a splash of milk
  • Finely chop/grate whatever veg you want in it (if you want larger veg/chunks you can microwave them to part cook first for example if I use peas I will soften them slightly first)
  • put veg in each muffin tin hole (probably enough to fill about 1/3 of the hole)
  • top each muffin tin hole up with the egg mix
  • I tend to add a sprinkling of grated cheese on top of each but you can skip this step if you're looking for healthier options (DH makes them with no veg and extra cheeseGrinWink)
  • bake until golden on top and eggs set (usually between usually around 20 mins but it depends how deep your muffin tin holes are
  • leave to cool a little and enjoy

I don't know why I wrote "basically though" before preheating the oven Blush

Sliced apple with honey dip
Natural yogurt with blueberries and a drizzle of honey

Fattoushka · 13/12/2020 07:52

Frozen Greek yoghurt bark with a fruit purée and fruit pieces mixed in

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 13/12/2020 08:02

JDBI!

Just Don’t Buy It!

I keep a jar of cornichons / small pickles in the fridge. Also olives. Lidl and Aldi are great for these.

Frozen blueberries and cherries with a spoonful of Greek Yogurt, so that the yogurt freezes: lovely.

Sachets of miso soup.

Put yourself through No Snack Bootcamp and after a week the urge disappears. Having done this early in lockdown I now can eat just one of those little dark choc covered heart cakes filled with jam (lebkuchen?), whereas before I would have eaten half the packet. But I had to go cold turkey. Now I am genuinely happy with one.

I've never been a snack person nor have I ever had a big appetite, but my daughter recently asked me to support her to lose weight.
I prepare her chopped up fruit, carrot sticks , cucumber sticks, sliced meat and boiled eggs & leave them in the fridge for her to help herself.
I find having it prepared helps her to stay focused rather than diving for the unhealthy snacks. It's all about convenience

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 13/12/2020 09:00

I'm on a specific diet which means I eat a lot of protein which fills me up. My go-to snacks are oatcakes with cottage cheese and chilli flakes, skyr style natural yogurt with frozen cherries and I always have cooked turkey in my fridge for sandwiches or just picking at. I don't drink traditional tea or coffee really but I do have a cup of good coffee made with hot milk (half milk, half hot water) and vanilla protein powder mixed in, it's my treat to myself, hits the sweet cravings and fills me up too. Oh and I drink a lot of water!

Scales2020 · 13/12/2020 11:41

Yeah I do think eating a small amount of high protein, like egg, meat, thick yogurt, that kind of thing, helps you achieve satiety faster.

@ThatIsNotMyUsername

What’s your instructions please as would like to use just egg whites as you do

Thanks

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 13/12/2020 19:59

I Probably make it the same as you - put some
Baby Spinach leaveS and halved baby tomatoes (Sprinkle is salt and pepper) in the bottom of metal muffin tins and bake for about 5 mins at 200 (to dry them out a bit) then whisk the egg whites and add some herbs, pour in too them bake (grated cheese on top is nice). Takes about 20 mins. Rather tasty and nice for breakfast.

Snacks are unnecessary

I used to just give my kids a ham or cheese sandwich after school

grey12 · 14/12/2020 09:19

Take healthy snacking when you're out of the house. There's no choice Wink if they're hungry, they'll eat the cucumber sticks/carrots/fruit/rice cakes/wtv

grey12 · 14/12/2020 09:28

Plain yogurt with mashed banana. No need for sugar or honey

What's that, if not a snack?!

But it would seem on a previous thread, you are rather partial to a snack yourself!

Pikachubaby

$I make quite a lot of cakes too grin*

*$So today for example:+$

1 slice whole meal toast with butter and marmite
1 slice of ginger cake
Tea with milk

Mid morning: coffee with milk

Lunch: vegetarian fried breakfast (3 hash brown, 1 fried egg, baked beans, mushrooms, tomato)

Couple of cups of tea and a bit of chocolate (4squares)

5 O’clock munchies: peanuts and raisins

Tonight I will just have a ham and tomato sandwich (with mayo) and a salad (green bean salad in vinaigrette)

I may also have a piece of apple cinnamon cake later

WhenPushComesToShove · 14/12/2020 15:12

@SquirtleSquad - you've inspired me! I have some in the oven as I read 💕

praepondero · 15/12/2020 14:26

The secret to healthy snacking - don't snack, surely?!

Pikachubaby · 15/12/2020 14:33

Haha I have been stalked and caught out Grin

But I thought this was related to primary aged kids and tots, I was not big on them “snacking”, more about meals and sandwiches.

We now eat a lot of cake/banana bread/pringles/etc as kids are 16/18 and bottomless pits (as am I due to too much sport)

But generally, I think it’s healthier not to snack and just stick to 3 meals 😇

SquirtleSquad · 15/12/2020 17:29

@WhenPushComesToShove how were they!?

Someone says something as “snacks are unnecessary” is crying out to be stalked.

And then when I found that post.... absolutely rammed with snacks I did Grin

WhenPushComesToShove · 16/12/2020 10:48

@SquirtleSquad - very delicious thank you, I shall be making more 😋
