Just 'inherited' our family Christmas pudding recipie that has been made every since, well we dont when for sure but definitley before 1900!
We have no idea where my G G grandmother got it from, possible hhr mum? who knows!)

My grandmotehr has made this recipie for the past 40ish years, but last year hurt her elbow... (she always makes 2 at a time, one for this year and one for next) so we are eating the last one this Christmas... and next year and beyond I intend to keep making it!... into the 5th generation, and hopefully when i have them my children will keep it going as well!

Have to say its a very yummy recipie... im not overly keen on bought Xmas pud, but this one is just so yummy!

OK!

Make in September:

3oz Plain Flour
4 oz bread crumbs
4 oz Suet
½ tsp mixed spice
Pinch salt
2 grated nutmeg
8 oz Raisins (cut small)
8 oz Sultanas
8 oz Currents
4 oz Almonds (blanched and chopped small but not too fine)
4 oz Cherries or mixed peel
8 oz Brown Sugar
1 small grated apple
1 small grated carrot
Juice of 2 lemons
Juice of 2 oranges
Rind of 1 Orange
½ wine glass brandy
¼ pint milk IF needed

Makes 1 large pudding or 2 small puddings

Put all the abpve ingrediants (In this order) into a large mixing bowl and mix

Butter the pudding basin(s) and put mix in bowl.
Cover with buttered grease proof paper

(My grandmother makes 2 small puddings, 1 in a 2pint pudding bowl and one in a 1.5 pint pudding bowl)

Steam a large pudding (larger than 2 pints which is still 'small') for 7 hours
Steam a small pudding for 6 hours
Keep in a cool place

Start feeding pudding with brandy from Mid Novmeber

On Christmas Day steam pudding for 3 hours.

(If you make 2 puddings the second will keep for the following year)

Yum, can't beat home made Christmas pudding

Slubberdegullion · 21/10/2007 09:36

Oh NannyL that looks divine. I wonder if you would bump this thread on maybe sat Nov 24th (so people can go out and buy the ingredients).

Stir up sunday (the traditional day of the year for making Christmas pud) falls on sun 25th Nov this year.

It's a tradition I love to follow (make me feel all Dickensian). Basically each member of the family gives the pudding mix a stir for luck for the following year.

While your Gr Gr grandmothers recp looks wonderful, I will be doing the Good Housekeeping one from last year which was fan-bloody-tastic

Slubberdegullion · 21/10/2007 09:38

I bet your Gr Gr garndmothers is a tad more alcoholic that the Good Housekeeping one. lol @ feeding it brandy from mid Nov!

NannyL · 21/10/2007 09:41

i expect it is.... probably the reason why its just SOOO yummy??

will try and remeber to bump on 24th Nov!
