we have had those for lunch today in Wagamama
i have only ever seen them in chinese supermarkets and they were fresh

agree - you need to pod them for full enjoyment!

SofiaAmes · 20/10/2007 16:29

You will find them in the frozen section of asian supermarkets. They are in bags. I know that the little Japanese store next to West Acton tube station has them. I'm fairly sure that most of the Japanese stores up Edgware Road way have them. (newspaper article says Supermaz on Edgware Road W9 has them) I too have found that even kids that don't like vegetables, LOVE the edamame. Podding them is fun and they are just slightly sweet too.

Cooking instructions: They are already cooked, so just need to be boiled enough to defrost. So boil water, add lots and lots and lots of salt and then a little more because you haven't added enough and then add frozen soybeans and once water has come back to a boil, boil for 5 minutes and drain and eat. Note: If they aren't salty enough, sprinkle with salt while they are still wet after cooking. And don't cook too much because skin gets mushy and they are hard to depod.

Wing Yip in Croydon has them in their pods. Birds Eye do them de-podded.

AitchTwoOh · 20/10/2007 22:24

see this is the bugger. no japanese stores in glasgow, so far as i'm aware. chinese, yes, but they don't seem to stock them. i'm goiing to keep looking though, ta. and thanks for the cooking tips.

Do you know about this store www.matthewsfoods.co.uk/ ? I couldn't find edamame on their website, but sure seems like they would carry them, or be able to get them for you.

wheelybug · 22/10/2007 20:54

Not quite the same but dd loves podding and eating peas in their pods inc. sugar snaps -worth a try if the edamame aren't easy to get hold of ?

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 22/10/2007 20:56

LOL I knew this was you, you ponce

HubbleBubbleToilAndTrouble · 22/10/2007 20:58

Are the ones in Wing Yip fresh or frozen ?

HubbleBubbleToilAndTrouble · 22/10/2007 21:00

look here Wing Yip Online Nice chinese supermarket clean, fresh and certainly not dodgy. I buy at my local one

spookthief · 22/10/2007 21:01

This place sells them frozen. Search the online shop for edamame. It's a 400g something bag for £1.99 but I haven't looked at the postage costs (is UK based though).

SofiaAmes · 22/10/2007 21:02

I have only ever seen them frozen in both the uk and here in california. Some vegetables are better frozen if you can't find them super super fresh (like corn).

spookthief · 22/10/2007 21:04

Have you asked in that huge Chinese Supermarket at Cowcaddens btw? (of course you have) Just that they seem, to my uneducated eye, to have everything...

Jekyllywoo · 22/10/2007 21:07

they are bloody lovely - but let's face it, it's the saltiness kids love, if you got them home and cooked then normally - ie, without the salt, more salt, then add some more salt method - I bet they wouldn't like them so much.

Not much use now but my dd is currently snarfing her way through her crop of borlotti beans from the garden, they look so pretty in pink pods and can be boiled in the pods (minus the salt) so they can still have all the fun of the podding.

AitchTwoOh · 22/10/2007 23:24

i phoned them, spooky, and they said no. but i might pop in all the same, if i can brave that junction...
other than that, ladies, you ahve been marvellous, dd will be most grateful. thankyou...

Marks and Spencer definitely sold them over the summer as I bought some, but I am not sure if they still do.

Anchovy · 29/10/2007 12:46

We get them from our local Thai store/supermarket, so it may not just be Chinese stores.

My DD (just 4) also adores them!

Waitrose do them in the pod in plastic tubs, they are in the sandwich/sushi section.

Catrin · 10/03/2013 22:25

Yes to Waitrose.
Plus, you can buy them (podded) in the freezer section - they are soya beans.

Randomly... for some reason the pods smell absolutely rank after the event. Accused ex of smoking in the car as the smell was so vile, then discovered a stash of pods in the door on dd's side.

Beehatch · 10/03/2013 22:32

Zombie thread. Should think Aitch's DD I'd probably beyond her edemame obsession by now - six years later!!

nyxie3 · 19/09/2014 17:14

You can buy them in Tesco. My mum couldn't find them in store, but I ordered them from Tesco online. Got four bags, are , amazing. Come frozen in 500g bags

Baabaapinksheep · 19/09/2014 18:47

Tesco and waitrose sell bags of them frozen, waitrose also do little tubs of fresh one.

Stealthpolarbear · 19/09/2014 18:50

:)

Cantdothisagain · 19/09/2014 19:01

Pret in London had them like the Wagamama ones but they aren't cheap - I loved them too!

Stealthpolarbear · 19/09/2014 20:08

I think in the last 7 years op has either found a supplier or resigned herself to a life without soy beans
