Instant pot for dummies

I bought one on Black Friday, and I’m a bit intimidated by it!
I thought I’d start by making porridge, but apparently it more complicated because I want to use milk. And Pyrex isn’t suitable, so I need another type of oven proof bowl to make it in. And now I’m wondering why it’s better than a microwave for porridge!
Please help me get started on something simple, and makes friends with my instant pot.
Is there a book or a website that will help me?

I think the thing is that porridge is an incredibly simple and fast thing to make in general so using an Instant Pot just complicates it in this instance.

Just use the microwave or the hob!

Instant pot porridge is the best! I now don't make it any other way! I have used Pyrex in there and a bowl to make the porridge but do now have some metal bowls that I bought from lidl a month or so ago

If you eat yoghurt it is very easy to make in the Instant Pot.
Get a bio yoghurt from the supermarket, Fage is good but any live natural yoghurt will do.
A litre or two of milk, depending on how much yoghurt you will eat. It is nice for about two weeks.
Put the milk in the Instant Pot press the yoghurt button and BOIL will flash, leave it and it will boil.
When it beeps finish lift the lid off and let the milk cool to lukewarm.
Then skim the top with a tablespoon/serving spoon.
Take a cup of the milk out, mix two tablespoons of bio yoghurt into it then add back to the Instant Pot.
Press yoghurt again and set it to Normal Temp and 6-8 hours.
It will beep when finished, let it cool and put in the fridge in a Kilner Jar.
If you want it thicker then put the yoghurt in a Muslin cloth to drain for a few hours.

I use Pyrex in my instant pot. Apparently Pyrex they sell in the US is made in a different way and not suitable.

Following for suggestions as I have also just got one.

Eggcellent, could you talk me through how you make porridge please? I’d really appreciate your help.
My hope is I can set it going, then shower, and come back to delicious hot porridge!

I use Pyrex in IP. I often make a curry in the steel inner pot with rice in Pyrex bowl on the trivet.

I use pyrex in instant pot to make porridge too for 3 people. I use 40g oats and 200ml milk per person. I put 175ml hot water in pot then put pyrex bowl with oats and milk in on top of the stand. Put lid on and then vent to closed. Set timer for 4 mins and then leave and have cup of tea in bed. Leave pressure to come down naturally come down come down and give porridge a stir and dish up.

Ah I use this recipe www.hippressurecooking.com/pressure-cooker-oatmeal-how-to/ it's important to do pot in pot (putting the smaller pot on the trivet) as it will burn! I buy the 'posh' Aldi oats in the paper bag which are the bigger rolled oats with oatly batista (but have used milk too). They cook in about 12 minutes on the porridge setting. I do a natural pressure release (which is basically leave it until the silver thing next to the valve drops). I love pret porridge and find it a lot like that.

Before you do anything with the pot you must do the water test!

Lots of Facebook groups too with advice and ideas. I wouldn't have done boiled eggs for example if I hadn't have seen it on the instant pot group. Same with risotto, husband didn't like it now we have the pot it's an easy meal and he loves it. Love my pot and air fryer, the oven and hob don't get used that much!

Hope you have fun experimenting!

I use 1 cup rolled oats (prefer the jumbo ones) to 2 cups milk. Put that in bowl (I have metal ones). 2 cups water in InstantPot bowl. I put it in night before and set the timer. Set it to 6 mins on manual. That way it’s ready when I get up. If you cook it in the morning it will need to sit about 10 mins after cooking. Been doing it like this for over 2 year now
